一项长达五年的科学研究发现，珠心算训练并非简单的技能学习，而是可能在认知结构层面，对儿童大脑产生深刻而持久的积极影响，促进了关键认知能力的协同发展。近期，一项由浙江大学领衔，与华东师范大学、香港浸会大学、德国奥尔登堡大学联合开展的研究，揭示了一个独特的现象：长期、系统的珠心算训练可以改变儿童发育过程中数学能力和执行功能的分化趋势，促进了两者的“重新融合”。
　　也就是说，珠心算不仅有助于提升计算速度，更是以一种独特的视空间策略影响了相关认知结构和大脑功能。

珠心算的启智功能主要表现在：
双手拨珠，促进大脑开发
双手拨珠是珠心算教育中的必经动作。通过左右手共同拨珠，使人的视觉、听觉、触觉及有关部位的肌肉都协调一致活动，大脑左右两半球同时运用，同时指挥双手操作，右手的运动开发了左脑的计算和逻辑思维功能，左手的运动开发了右脑的想象力和创造力的功能。大脑左右两半球互传信息，协调了双手的动作，也开发了大脑的整体功能，人的肢体活动又作用于大脑开发，这就是“心灵则手巧，手巧则心灵”的辩证关系。
“脑成像”运作，开发大脑潜能。
珠心算教育进入高级阶段后，大脑中形成“脑成像”—映像记忆，完全可以不用手指拨珠，而是直接在大脑中展开运算。心理学认为，在人脑中储存着两种信息，即图形和语言。图像就是客观事物的具体形象，这种在头脑中的形象，心理学称为表象，它不仅具有直观性、概括性的特性，而且还具有可操作性。这种可操作性就是指表象能顾在头脑中任意的旋转和变换，也就是对表象进行操作加工，正是这种表象的可操作性使形象思维成为可能。珠心算的过程，是在逻辑思维指导下结合形象思维来完成的，它在脑中的图像是算珠。正是由于表象具有的可操作性，使算珠增减变动在脑中的操作加工、运算成为可能，有力的促进了大脑整体功能的开发提高。
