During coaching sessions, remember to ask caregivers about more than just how many words their child says!

Communication is wayyyyy more than just word count, so we want to know HOW their child communicates, how they get their wants/needs met- and what that looks like at home as well as with other people.
It also helps to talk about their child's comprehension skills, and how they know that their child has understood them.

Plus, a big one I always ask is about what things they've already tried at home. How that has gone, how their child responded, etc.

All of this gives you SO much useful information that you can use in your sessions.

(There are loadssssss more Qs to ask, btw. This is just to give some ideas!)

This week we are thinking about Speech and Language Therapy!

The visual of the Communication Pyramid is really useful for helping parents / carers and professionals understand the various component parts of communication, however we need to be careful that people know how communication skills develop. They develop in a hierarchy, so each skill supports the next level, and all levels continue to develop alongside each other. This is why we might have a child who can use their expressive language well, but is struggling to understand language, or other difficulties within the Communication Pyramid. Likewise, the Communication Pyramid helps us to see why we might support a child's attention and listening skills before we support their speech sounds.
