This intricate diagram provides a fundamental understanding of osmoregulation, a critical physiological process for fish that dictates their survival in diverse aquatic environments.

Freshwater fish, operating as hyperosmotic regulators, actively combat osmotic water gain and ion loss through their gills and kidneys, maintaining internal homeostasis despite a constant influx of water.

Conversely, saltwater fish, as hypoosmotic regulators, face the challenge of osmotic water loss and ion gain, employing specialized gill ionocytes for ion excretion and actively drinking seawater to offset dehydration. The remarkable adaptability of euryhaline fish, like salmon, highlighted in the diagram, showcases a reversible gill function, a biological marvel essential for their anadromous migrations and a key area of study for understanding fish resilience in changing salinities.
