Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to cook for some friends. I had chives in my cooking and I noticed that one child picked it out. When I asked her to try it, she refused, at which her mother chimed in later that she also doesn’t eat it and doesn’t cook it at home.

This got me thinking about all the adult picky eaters that I have encountered. Of course, we no longer call them picky eaters, simply because they are adults and they have a choice. But, what got them to dislike those certain foods?

One BIG reason: Those foods were never served at their homes by their parents.

If you do not like fish, you will not cook fish, and your child will have very limited exposure to fish.

Familiarity breeds acceptance, and it takes time—sometimes 10 to 15 exposures before a child will comfortably accept a new food. However, most of us parents, due to time constraints and the busyness of life, will give up after a few tries.

So, if you want to raise a good eater, try these strategies:
- Serve these foods before they turn 12 months, getting their palate used to the taste before they know how to reject a food.
- Let them touch and feel the ingredients in the market and stores, and at home, before cooking them.
- Allow your child to be part of the food preparation process.
- Talk about how good the food is for them and what it does for their growing bodies.
- Serve just a piece and encourage them to try, and repeat this many times.
- Serve the new food item with familiar food.

I don't remember having a picnic at such a young age. Neither do I remember having such a fancy picnic set up. Our teachers did a great job, didn't they? I see so much effort on their part, and such an amazing experience for the children!

For some children, today's experience in Treehouse was probably their first!

Our creative teachers created a dark hall, with background music, printed tickets with numbers, planned a snack and everything in between!

Every day is a new day. A day to work and play. A day to learn. A day to rejoice. A day to make new friends!
