English should be a fun and exciting experience. At Brainwave Academy language school, our teachers and students participate in engaging classroom activities. This week they are baking chocolate cookies. Our teacher supervises the student who will take turns to make the cookies themselve. We love seeing the students having fun in class.

Let's learn idiom with us 😍

Today's idiom is "under the weather". You can use this idiom to tell people you are sick.

For example, "I will need to see the doctor as I'm under the weather."

Hope you find this useful.

Let's learn idiom with us 😍

Today's idiom is "cost an arm and a leg". Arm and a leg is priceless so when expressing this idiom, it's basically saying that particular thing is so expensive that you will have to pay with an arm and a leg.

For example, "That meal cost me an arm and a leg."

Hope you find this useful.

Let's learn idiom with us 😍

Today's idiom is "spill the bean". Yes. This is almost similar to a recent gen z slang, "spill the tea". "Spill the bean" means to reveal ones secret.

For example, "She spill the bean about getting Anna a surprise present."

Hope you find this useful.

Let's learn idiom with us 😍

Today's idiom is "out of the blue". You may have heard it before. It is used when you wanted to express that something has happened suddenly without prior warning.

For example, "The news came out of the blue."

Hope you find this useful.

After years of grading IGCSE English essays, one pattern has become increasingly clear to me: many students aim to do just enough to complete the task, rather than enough to truly meet the standard. On the surface, their work may appear acceptable—they answer the question, structure their ideas loosely, and demonstrate basic language control. However, what they often produce falls short of the depth, clarity, and precision required for a solid B1 level.

A B1 response is not simply about completing the task; it requires consistent development of ideas, clear organisation, and a reasonable range of vocabulary and sentence structures. Unfortunately, many students stop at the minimum—brief points with little elaboration, repetitive language, and limited attention to accuracy. As a teacher, it can be frustrating to see potential left unrealised, especially when small but deliberate improvements—such as expanding ideas, varying expressions, and proofreading—could make a significant difference.

This “just enough” mindset is something we need to address early on. Students must understand that adequacy does not equate to proficiency, and that reaching a B1 standard demands effort beyond the bare minimum.

思维导图(Mind Map)写作技巧非常适合 SJKC 及 IGCSE 学生提升英语写作能力。
通过在中心写下主题(Topic),再向外延伸出主要要点(Main Points),最后补充细节(Supporting Details),学生可以:
1. 清晰整理写作思路
2. 避免内容重复或偏题
3. 提高文章结构(Introduction – Body – Conclusion)的完整性
4. 增强词汇与句型的运用
对于 SJKC 学生,思维导图有助于加强英语表达逻辑;
对于 IGCSE 学生,则能有效规划论点(Point)、解释(Explain)与例子(Example),提升作文分数。
在正式动笔前先画思维导图,是提高英语写作效率与质量的关键步骤。

Many international school students struggle with Bahasa Melayu, not because they are weak, but because they don’t fully understand the vocabulary.

In this class, Teacher Kannaki:

• Gets students to repeat after her for correct pronunciation
• Calls them one by one to read confidently
• Encourages and praises them immediately
• Explains each BM word in English so they truly understand

When students understand, they stop memorising blindly.
When they feel confident, they participate without fear.

This is how we build strong foundations in BM.

If your child finds Bahasa Melayu confusing or intimidating, we can help.
