🌏📈 Transforming Mathematics Teaching Across Southeast Asia

The School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS) at Sunway University recently joined forces with the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation Regional Centre for Education in Science and Mathematics ( ) for a regional professional development programme. This was a true gathering of pioneers from all across Southeast Asia, bringing together maths teachers from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Led by Ghajendran Poovanandran, the training focused on a fundamental shift in the classroom – Problem-based Learning (PBL). Rather than starting with a traditional lesson, PBL starts with a challenge. We encouraged teachers to present students with a real-world problem first, allowing the students to hit the wall and realize what they do not know.

By identifying their own knowledge gaps, students are motivated to explore unknown territory and discover mathematical truths for themselves. It is all about weaving computational thinking into the curriculum to turn students into architects of logic, rather than just human calculators who follow a script.

To help bridge the gap between the unknown and the solution, the Desmos Graphing Tool was integrated as a vital companion. Desmos served as a dynamic playground where teachers could help students explore these new concepts visually. When a student can see a graph respond to their logic in real-time, the eureka moment happens much faster.

The program concluded with groups of teachers working collaboratively to design their own PBL activity. Moving away from routine procedures and memorization, they developed creative activities that transform real-world maths problems into a learning ground. These activities, designed to take students on a journey of exploration, are ready for implementation in classrooms across the region.

This collaboration reaffirms the shared commitment between SMS and SEAMEO RECSAM to empower the next generation of educators. By advancing innovation across the region, we are ensuring that mathematics education in Southeast Asia remains as dynamic and interconnected as the countries themselves.

The School of Mathematical Sciences, Sunway University, is pleased to feature Dr. Jason Ng Wei Jian (https://sunwayuniversity.edu.my/school-of-mathematical-sciences/staff-profiles/assoc-prof-dr-jason-ng-wei-jian) as the Researcher of the Month. He serves as Head of the Centre for Actuarial and Analytics Research (CAAARE) and is an Associate Fellow of the Sunway Institute for Global Strategy and Competitiveness. An econometrician by training, Dr. Jason specialises in applying advanced analytical frameworks to address critical issues of national importance, with a strong emphasis on delivering meaningful translational impact.

Dr. Jason’s research is deeply embedded in the "quintuple helix" of academia, industry, society, government, and the environment, and is closely aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to good health and well-being, quality education, decent work and economic growth, reduced inequalities, and sustainable cities and communities. His work bridges the gap between theoretical modelling and evidence-based policy formulation. His expertise has been instrumental in several high-impact national study projects, including collaborations with the Ministry of Health on forecasting diabetes incidence, the Ministry of Economy on the development of the Malaysia Blue Economy Blueprint 2025-2040, and policy-oriented research undertaken for the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living.

Beyond his policy-driven work, Dr. Jason’s research interests encompass subjective well-being, housing affordability, and the dynamics of electorate behaviour in Malaysia. By leveraging data-driven analytics and statistical modelling, he provides actionable insights into socio-economic challenges, particularly those affecting vulnerable communities, ensuring that mathematical sciences contribute directly to sustainable development and inclusive societal progress.
