Children learn math best when they can see it, touch it, and discover it for themselves.
5 Tips for Parents: Helping Young Learners Start Math the Bruner Way

1. Start with Hands-On Experiences (Enactive Stage)
Let your child touch, move, and play with real objects β€” blocks, coins, buttons, or fruits.

Before learning β€œ2 + 3,” let them see and feel what adding means.
βœ… Builds a solid understanding through action and exploration.

2. Use Pictures and Visuals (Iconic Stage)
After hands-on play, encourage your child to draw or visualize what they did.

Example: draw five apples instead of just writing β€œ5.”
βœ… Connects real experiences to images, preparing them for symbols later.

3. Introduce Symbols Gradually (Symbolic Stage)
Once your child understands pictures, show how symbols represent those ideas.

β€œπŸŽπŸŽπŸŽ β†’ 3 apples β†’ the number 3.”
βœ… Helps them move naturally from concrete to abstract thinking.

4. Encourage Discovery, Not Just Answers
Ask guiding questions instead of giving solutions.

β€œWhat do you notice?” or β€œHow could you find another way?”
βœ… Promotes curiosity, confidence, and a growth mindset β€” they learn to think like a mathematician.

5. Revisit Concepts in New Ways (Spiral Learning)
Review old topics using new examples or higher levels of challenge.

β€œWe used to count apples β€” can we count coins now?”
βœ… Strengthens long-term understanding and shows that learning never stops.

PS : Jerome Bruner (1915–2016) was one of the most influential psychologists and educational theorists of the 20th century. He was an American cognitive psychologist whose work transformed the way educators understand how children learn and think.
