Accelerating Green Development in Asia by UTM UTM Summer School SS14

Over the past two decades, tremendous knowledge and best practices are reported to curb climate change due to increased population and urbanization. Implementing sustainable practices to ensure green growth in Asia is critical as Asia has many fast growing cities and is regarded as the world factory. Despite the enormous knowledge generated, there are still
gaps for real actions to be implemented

in the developing countries at a desirable pace. There is an urgent need
of integrating diverse stakeholders including academicians, policy makers, local authorities and business entities to implement the low carbon real actions on the ground. This short course share the various low carbon actions including the enabling green policies, sustainable green technologies for major sectors (land use, energy, waste, water, food), the systemic measuring and monitoring tools for managing climate change, and innovative cooperation and financing models to bridge the existing gaps and to leapfrog the green growth in Asia.

Greetings from SS14: Accelerating Green Development in Asia! 🌿
On March 11th, we visited the UTM Kuala Lumpur campus for an introduction to the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT). This visit gave us great insights into the strong educational and research ties between Malaysia and Japan.

During our UTM KL campus tour, the students got an exciting, immersive lab tour covering advanced manufacturing. They learned how CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines craft precise, smooth objects by removing material from a raw block, using machines with 3 to 9 axes for extra mobility! We also checked out 3D printing, which builds objects from scratch using filaments. Although it leaves a rougher surface compared to CNC, 3D printing can produce less waste. Plus, the students got to understand how reverse engineering works, where 3D scanners are used to scan and recreate physical components. 💻

The next day, we learned about the TRX green building concept with a tour around TRX City Park, followed by a visit to the ESG Centre. As Malaysia’s first ‘Sustainability Insights’ hub, the students learned how the centre supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and practical carbon reduction. We then wrapped up the day with a visit to the historic Stadium Merdeka. 🏢

Finally, on March 14th, we officially sent off our delegates at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) for their flights home. It was bittersweet saying our last goodbyes after an amazing three weeks filled with green innovation and lifelong friendships.

Thank you to all the participants for making SS14 2026 a huge success. Let's continue to champion a sustainable future together! 🚀🌍

After arriving in KL on March 9th, we wrapped up our first evening with a relaxing KLCC night walk to catch the stunning view of the Petronas Twin Towers. ✨

The adventure continued on March 10th with a cultural walking trail right in the heart of the city. We explored the vibrant Central Market and Petaling Street, checked out the unique BookXcess at RexKL, and took in the historical architecture at Dataran Merdeka and Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad.

During our trip, we also made a stop at Putrajaya to visit the beautiful Putra Mosque. The students had a great time taking photos with its iconic pink domes right by the scenic lake! Later in the week, everyone enjoyed a "Free and Easy" day to do some last-minute souvenir shopping and explore the iconic golden statue and colourful steps at Batu Caves!

Week 3 marked the final chapter of our incredible SS14 journey! For this last leg of the program, our delegates travelled up north from Johor to explore the historical city of Melaka.

On March 8th, we went for a City Walk to soak in the rich cultural heritage. The students had a great time walking down the lively Jonker Walk and taking group photos at iconic landmarks like the A Famosa fortress and the vibrant Stadthuys (Red Square).

To learn more about the city's past, we dropped by the Fort of Melaka Heritage Gallery. It was a very insightful visit, giving the students a closer look at Melaka's deep history as a global maritime trading hub.We also visited the beautiful Melaka Straits Mosque (Masjid Selat Melaka). The students got to experience the local culture firsthand, and the view of the grand mosque sitting right by the water was simply stunning.

It was a fulfilling day of sightseeing before we packed our bags and headed to Malaysia's bustling capital, Kuala Lumpur! ✨

As our time in Johor came to an end, we gathered for a heartfelt Farewell Dinner filled with meaningful moments and joyful celebrations. The evening was beautifully highlighted by our Ichigo Ichie spirit…treasuring this once-in-a-lifetime gathering as everyone came together to appreciate the friendships built over the past two weeks.

We celebrated our “birthday stars” of the month, making the night even more special with laughter, cakes, and warm wishes. The gift exchange session was another memorable highlight, symbolising the strong bonds and international friendships formed throughout the programme. Alongside these activities, everyone enjoyed a delightful meal, sharing stories and reflections in a relaxed and happy atmosphere.

It was truly a bittersweet evening as we said a fond farewell to our friends from Ritsumeikan University, who departed for home. As we move forward, the students from Hitotsubashi University will continue the next part of the journey.

Though it is never easy to part ways, the memories, connections, and shared experiences from this unforgettable evening will always be cherished. ✨🤝

The intense and inspiring morning of presentations was proudly followed by the official SS14 Closing Ceremony-a beautiful event dedicated to honouring the dedication and brilliance of our participants.

We were very honoured to have our distinguished VIPs join us for this special event. The ceremony was gracefully set in motion with an opening Speech by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hasrinah Binti Hasbullah (Research, Innovation & Development). We extend a special, heartfelt thank you to Professor Dr. Mat Uzir Bin Wahit (Dean of FKT) and Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Daniel Joe Dailin (Head of Department of Bioprocess & Polymer Engineering) for their invaluable presence.

To our esteemed international guests, Prof. Koji Shimada from Ritsumeikan University, Prof. Hiroshi Ota from Hitotsubashi University and Dr. Zhang Tian Yuan from Dalian University of Technology for joining us. Your continuous support for global green initiatives has truly inspired our young delegates as they step up as environmental champions! ✨

The excitement in the room reached its peak during the special prize-giving session, where we rewarded the most outstanding group presentations and innovative ideas. This was followed by the proudest moment of the day: the awarding of the Commencement Certificates! Seeing the joyful smiles as each participant held up their certificate was the perfect way to officially celebrate their incredible growth, cross-cultural teamwork, and hard work. 🏆🌍

Greetings from SS14: Accelerating Green Development in Asia! 🌿
Throughout the week, our delegates dedicated countless hours to deep discussion, cross-cultural brainstorming, and refining their team projects. It was truly inspiring to see students from different academic backgrounds working closely together to tackle real-world environmental challenges. All this hard work, research, and preparation finally led to the highly anticipated Group Presentation Day!

This year, the teams focused their brilliant minds on a highly relevant central theme: Conversion of Food Waste. The room was filled with creative and practical sustainable solutions as each group presented their unique approach. To make their solutions truly comprehensive and ready for the real world, each group was also tasked with a tough but rewarding challenge: conducting a detailed Greenhouse Gas (GHG) assessment calculation! This critical step allowed them to scientifically measure the environmental impact and prove the actual carbon reduction potential of their proposed methods.

We are incredibly proud of the high-level research, critical thinking, and innovative ideas presented by all the teams! 📊♻️💡

The fun continued on February 27th when everyone travelled to Kukup Village for a relaxing 2-day, 1-night social outing! The delegates took a scenic boat ride out on the water to explore the beautiful fishing village. When evening came, everyone sat together for a hearty seafood dinner, bonding over good food and great company. 🚤🦀

The absolute highlight of the trip was the Cultural Night! Our participants proudly wore their traditional outfits, including beautiful Japanese Yukatas and elegant Chinese Hanfu. It was a fantastic night filled with fun activities and lots of laughter. A particularly memorable moment was when Prof Lee presented red packets to the participants. As we celebrated the Chinese New Year of the Horse, this gesture symbolised blessings, good health, and prosperity for all! This cultural exchange really brought everyone closer together as one big SS14 family. ✨🌌

As the first week came to a close, it was also a bittersweet moment for us. We had to bid a heartfelt farewell to our delegates from China. They could only participate for one week as their semester break had ended and their school was reopening. We are so grateful for your energy, ideas, and the wonderful memories we shared together. Safe travels back, and we will miss you! ✈️❤️
Wishing our remaining participants more unforgettable memories in the days ahead! 🚀🌱
