UUM VICE-CHANCELLOR GIVEN THE HONOUR BY UI GREENMETRIC TO SHARE UUM’S BEST PRACTICES
UUM ONLINE: The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dato’ Dr Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani was given the honour by UI GreenMetric to share UUM’s best practices at the 6th International (Virtual) Workshop on UI GreenMetric World University Rankings (IWGM 2020) which took place virtually for three days.
During the programme which was organized by Zanjan University, Iran, the Vice-Chancellor shared innovations and best practices related to the latest issues in environmental and infrastructure management, energy, waste, water, transportation, education and research on green campuses with representatives from other universities from around the world.
According to him, this year UUM was given the honour to share its best practices and innovations related to education and research in the development of sustainable universities.
He said, the initiatives made by UUM had been formulated in a paper entitled 'Strengthening Education and Research in Facing COVID-19 Pandemic: Experience and Way Forward' which can be accessed at https://iwgm.ui.ac.id/presentation-from-invited- speakers/.
"I had the opportunity to present UUM's efforts in ensuring that education and research at UUM remained ongoing despite the COVID -19 threat which saw almost all sectors in Malaysia affected by the implementation of the Movement Control Order (PKP) in March 2020," he shared.
Meanwhile, the Director of CeTMA, Assoc. Prof Dr Nor Idayu Mahat said, following the COVID-19 pandemic that hit the world, the annual series attended by the Heads of Institutions of Higher Education from around the world this time was implemented virtually through the Zoom Meeting application and broadcast live on YouTube Channel IWGM 2020.
According to him, CeTMA as the secretariat of UUM Living Campus was responsible for planning and implementing campus sustainability plans in line with SDG2030 and UI GreenMetric while, the Quality Management Center (IPQ) was responsible for managing data transmission in order for UUM to be listed in the UI Green Metric University Ranking.
He said, every year the best practices and an innovative paper will be presented by a Vice-Chancellor in a workshop attended by Heads of Institutions of Higher Education from around the world by special invitation.
"During the video conference, several suggestions were made that can be used together, amongst them include sharing related new technologies or best practices in teaching and learning between universities. This can ensure that no students are left behind in studies due to access difficulties, especially for those in remote areas.
"Second, the collaboration of research and the publication of articles by academics from various universities can be enhanced so that the benefits can contribute to the development of countries and industries affected by the effects of COVID-19 pandemic.
"Third, the research focus should be coordinated to track the needs and resolve immediate issues of the community to ensure that the 'no one is left behind' mission is successful," he said.
Other representatives that shared their best practices related to the sustainability of education and research were the Deputy Rector of Diponegoro University, Indonesia, Prof. Ambariyanto; Prof. Ihor Soloviy (representative of the Rector of Ukrainian National Forestry University, Ukraine), Rafael Cordova (representative of the Rector of Escuela Superior Politécnica de Chimborazo, Ecuador) and Prof. Ouajdi Korbaa (University of Sousse, Tunisia) as the moderator.
