Music meets history at GOTS' Boogie Night concert

Using music as a teaching tool is nothing new at Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) International School. It is therefore no surprise that this year's pre-primary and primary concert is called Boogie Night: Music Through the Ages.

The concert will take audiences on a journey through nine defining moments from the 1950s to the 2000s, pairing iconic songs from each era with engaging historical storytelling. Blending music, performance and education, Boogie Night promises an entertaining experience that shows learning can be both meaningful and enjoyable.

Among the significant events featured are the Malayan Emergency, the rise of Tan Sri P. Ramlee as Malaysia's legendary all-round entertainer, the historic moon landing and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

This year's concert will be held on July 25 at Menara Ken, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, beginning at 12.30pm.

Before the concert, the school will host the inaugural GOTS Got Talent Grand Final at the same venue from 9am. Twelve finalists will compete for the honour of being crowned the competition's first-ever champion.

The GOTS Got Talent Grand Final will also feature a fashion show by seven scholars, who were tasked with creating designs based on the theme 'Sweet and Demure'.

The seven are Emma Mae Lee, Lisbeth Eirene Boinsin, Ana Safeeya Syahrul Hizan, Elise Lim, Yuvinaa Reuben, Tharshaana Uma Kandan and Cammy Wong.

New GOTS coaches reflect on learning journey

Starting a new teaching journey can be both exciting and challenging. Having supportive colleagues and leaders who are committed to helping you grow makes all the difference.

At Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) International School, co-founder Dr Veronica Shepherdson conducts professional development training twice a year to equip and inspire the teaching team. One such training session took place last week.

Among those attending the training for the first time were Physical Education coach Joshua Derrick and Mandarin coach Ho Eu Xuen.

Joshua said the training introduced practical strategies that he could immediately apply in his lessons. One of the highlights was learning about Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), which provided useful techniques for managing children more effectively in the classroom.

"I learnt many new things that will help me become a better teacher," said Joshua. "The tips on handling children are something I can use straight away during my lessons."

For Ho, the training was an opportunity for personal growth.

"It helped me understand my inner thoughts and discover parts of myself that I hadn't recognised before," she said.

Having joined GOTS four months ago, Ho said the training complemented her transition into the school.

"The people around me have been helpful and friendly," she said. "Whenever I need help, my colleagues are always willing to support me."

Although Joshua and Ho took away different lessons from the training, both agreed the experience contributed to their growth as educators and reinforced the importance of continuous learning.
