🌱 Myth: Montessori is Only for Preschoolers
It’s true that Dr. Maria Montessori devoted much of her life’s work to the 3–6 age group. The Children’s House was her laboratory where she observed, refined, and developed the materials and principles that would become the foundation of the entire Montessori approach.
But that doesn’t mean Montessori ends at preschool...
🌟 The Foundational Years (3–6)
The Children’s House is where Montessori’s discoveries took shape:
• the power of concentration
• the drive toward independence
• the sensitive periods
• the role of the prepared environment
• the materials that isolate concepts and support mastery
This plane is the philosophical anchor for everything that comes later. When children begin Montessori in these early years, they build the habits of mind, movement, and character that support success across all future planes.
🌿 Montessori Beyond Preschool
Although the 3–6 level is the most widely recognized and the most historically developed Montessori education extends far beyond it.
Infants & Toddlers (0–3):
Environments that support movement, language, and the earliest expressions of independence.
Elementary (6–12):
A shift from concrete exploration to expansive imagination, reasoning, and moral development. Cosmic Education gives children a framework for understanding the interconnectedness of all things.
Adolescence (12–18):
A time of identity, community, and real world contribution. Montessori envisioned adolescent programs that integrate meaningful work, economic participation, and social connection.
It’s a developmental continuum and one whose strength depends on the solid foundation laid in the early years.
For educators, understanding this full arc is transformative. It shifts Montessori from a set of early childhood practices to a complete, humane educational philosophy to one that supports the whole child across the whole journey.
