Vanakkam and greetings to all!
We came together last weekend to present a cultural opening performance for a Tamil school fundraising event. What we gathered was an experience that was both meaningful and unforgettable.
Beyond the excitement of performing on stage, we were truly amazed by the scale of the event and the deep cultural essence that it carried. The hall accommodated around 100 tables, and by the end of the evening, every seat was filled. The evening was thoughtfully curated, featuring traditional dance performances and rich Indian musical presentations that celebrated our heritage with pride and joy.
Why was this important and worth mentioning?
Of late, the portrayal of the Indian identity across social media has often shone in a negative light. These narratives around our community are shaped around crime, deceit, and negativity, creating a damaging and detrimental image for us all. Especially for young Indian children growing up in this environment, constant exposure to such stereotypes can destroy self-esteem and make these false narratives a reality. Eventually, they end up becoming what the media has made them to believe they are.
And last weekend, to witness our culture being celebrated correctly with dignity, pride, and joy is not just uplifting, it is necessary. It reminds us of who we truly are, a community rooted in resilience, intelligence, and rich cultural heritage.
Moving forward, this must be our vision, to create more spaces that reflect the true spirit of our identity, and to show the next generation that they come from a legacy of strength and excellence. If we continue to create, support, and celebrate platforms like this, we not only honour our heritage but also shape a stronger and more confident future for those who come after us.
