A WORRIED PARENT - CAMBRIDGE ENGLISH IGCSE

“Hmmmm… First Language or Second Language?”

Honestly, I don’t know. When I put my child into an international school, I thought English would improve naturally. But now that Cambridge IGCSE is getting closer, I’m starting to worry.

She speaks English. She understands English. But Cambridge First Language English is different.

Sometimes she reads a passage and tells me,
“Mum, I understand the story… but I don’t know how to answer the question.”

That worries me.Should I let her continue with First Language? Should I move her to Second Language?
Am I pushing her too hard… or giving up on her too soon?

I think that is the hardest part of being a parent. You want to challenge your child, but you don’t want to watch them lose confidence.

Maybe before changing anything, I just need someone experienced to look at her work and tell me honestly:
“Can she do this? And if she can, what does she need to learn?”

That is why I decided to speak to Mr. Daves at Daves Language House. Sometimes, before making a big decision for our children, we just need the right person to give us some clarity.

STORY - PART 1

SHE WAS READY TO DROP FIRST LANGUAGE ENGLISH.

🔷️️When “Jia” entered an international school after years in a Chinese-medium education system, she knew the transition would not be easy.

🔷️️Mathematics? She could cope. Science? She could work through it. But Cambridge IGCSE English as a First Language was different.

🔷️She could read the passages, but often struggled to understand what the writer was implying. She had ideas, but could not develop them effectively. Her essays sounded simple. Comprehension questions confused her. Writer’s effect seemed impossible.

🔷️Slowly, English became the subject she feared most. Then came the conversation many parents dread. “Maybe I should drop First Language English and take English as a Second Language instead.”

🔷️Her parents were torn. Perhaps changing subjects would make life easier. But they also wondered: Was she really incapable of mastering First Language English — or had she simply not been taught in a way that worked for her?

That was when she met Mr. Daves. To be continued...PART II

🟫WHEN YOUR CHILD SAYS, “I’M OKAY” — BUT YOU KNOW THEY ARE NOT.

You see your child sitting at the table with a Cambridge English book open in front of them.
They have read the story once. Then twice. Then again.
You ask,
“Do you understand it?”
They nod.
But when it is time to answer the questions, the page remains almost empty.
You try to explain. You encourage them. You tell them to read carefully.

Still, nothing seems to change. And as a parent, that is perhaps the hardest part. You know your child is trying. You see the hours spent studying.
You see the disappointment when another paper comes back with marks that do not reflect the effort.
You see the confidence slowly disappearing.

And quietly, you begin asking yourself:

“Why is my child still struggling?”
“What are we missing?”
“Will English become even more difficult when IGCSE begins?”
Sometimes, the problem is not that a child cannot learn English.
They simply have never been taught how to understand it.

At Daves Language House, we teach students how to break a text down, identify important information, understand what a writer is really saying and recognise exactly what a Cambridge question is asking.

We do not simply tell students to “read again.”
We teach them HOW to read.
We do not simply give them more exercises.
We teach them HOW to think through the question.
And we do not expect confidence to appear overnight.

We build it — through understanding, structured practice, correction and improvement.

Because there is a very different feeling when your child finally looks up from the page and says:

“I understand it now.”
That is where progress begins.

CAMBRIDGE ENGLISH IGCSE

MASTER IT. DON’T JUST STUDY IT.

🧿At Daves Language House, I do not believe that students should simply learn enough English to get through an examination.

🧿I teach them to understand how Cambridge English works.

🧿Students are trained to read with precision, interpret questions accurately, organise ideas clearly and write with purpose.

🧿Because when students understand what the examiner is looking for, they stop guessing — and start answering with confidence.

⚫️01 — MASTER THE SKILLS THAT MATTER

Cambridge English IGCSE is not about memorising model answers.

It is about developing the ability to:

• understand demanding texts
• recognise what a question is really asking
• select and develop relevant ideas
• write clearly, accurately and convincingly
• use language effectively for different purposes and audiences

My objective is simple: build the skills first. The marks will follow.

⚫️02 — LEARN THE RIGHT WAY

One of the biggest problems I see is this:

Students practise English, but they do not always know why they are losing marks.

That is why my lessons focus on:

clear explanation → guided practice → correction → improvement

I identify weaknesses, explain mistakes and teach students how to correct them.

No endless worksheets without direction.

No memorising essays without understanding.

Every lesson must move the student forward.

⚫️03 — PERFORM WITH CONFIDENCE

Confidence does not come from telling a student,
"You can do it."

Confidence comes when the student actually knows how to do it.

Through structured practice, examination techniques, targeted correction and consistent reinforcement, students gradually learn to approach Cambridge English with greater control.

They know how to begin.

They know how to develop an answer.

They know what to avoid.

And most importantly—they know what to do when they walk into the examination hall.

🔴Through the Eyes of Mr. Daves

When Mr. Daves looks at a student, he does not see weakness, fear or failure.

He sees potential. He sees the confidence that has not yet been discovered, the ability that has not yet been developed and the “A” that the student is capable of achieving.

Some students come to class believing that Bahasa Melayu is too difficult. Others are afraid to speak English because they worry about making mistakes. Some have already accepted the idea that they are simply “not good at languages.”

But Mr. Daves sees beyond their present struggles.
He sees the student they can become.
With the sharp focus of a tiger, he observes every mistake, identifies every weakness and understands exactly where improvement must begin. He does not merely teach a lesson and move on. He guides, corrects, encourages and patiently builds each student’s skills, one step at a time.

In Bahasa Melayu, he teaches students how to understand questions, organise ideas, apply grammar correctly and write with confidence.

In English, he helps them develop stronger vocabulary, clearer sentence structures, better writing skills and the courage to communicate without fear.

To Mr. Daves, every mistake is not a failure. It is a clue.
It tells him what the student needs, which method should be used and how the lesson should be approached. His focus is not only on completing the syllabus. His focus is on ensuring that the student truly understands, improves and succeeds.
He continues to see the “A” even before the student can see it.

That is the look of a dedicated teacher—the look of someone who refuses to give up on his students. A teacher who remains focused on their progress and sees them through every challenge until they achieve the results they deserve.

At Dave’s Language House, success begins with a teacher who believes in the student.

Because when a student is taught through the right system, guided by the right approach and supported by a teacher who genuinely cares, fear slowly disappears and achievement takes its place.

Mr. Daves does not look at where a student is today.

He looks at how far that student can go.
He sees potential.
He sees progress.
He sees success.
He sees the “A”.

A Message to Students from Mr. Daves

Dear students,

Reading is like breathing in.
Every time you open a book, read an article or explore a new story, you take in fresh ideas, new words and different ways of seeing the world. You may not notice the change immediately, but every page quietly strengthens your mind.

Writing is like breathing out.
It is how you release your thoughts, express your feelings and show others what you have understood. The more you read, the more confidently you will write. The more you write, the clearer your thoughts will become. Do not say, “I am not good at writing.”
No one becomes a good writer overnight. Good writing begins with one sentence, followed by another. It grows through reading, practice, correction and courage.

Read beyond your schoolbooks. Read stories that make you laugh, articles that make you think and books that take you to places you have never visited. Collect interesting words. Notice how sentences are written. Then take those ideas and create something of your own.

Remember, your voice matters.
Your ideas deserve to be heard, but you must first develop the language to express them. So, read every day and write whenever you can. Even ten minutes of reading and a short paragraph of writing can make a difference when practised consistently.

Breathe in knowledge through reading.
Breathe out your imagination through writing.

One day, you will look back and realise that every word you read helped you become the confident person and powerful writer you were meant to be.

Keep reading. Keep writing. Keep growing.
