What happens when parents slow down and simply observe their babies?
In RIE® Parent-Infant Guidance™ Classes, babies are given space to explore freely while parents observe, reflect, and discuss their experiences together. Guided by a RIE Associate, these classes offer a supportive place to learn about infant development and respectful caregiving.
Through observation and conversation, parents begin to see their babies with new eyes, building understanding, trust and confidence in the relationship.

Activity Name: Touching Sand and Water
The main objective is to help children experience the differences between sand and water.
The teacher will first demonstrate how to touch, grasp, and pour, allowing children to observe that sand falls while water flows, and then let them explore on their own.
Through this activity, children can develop tactile experiences, practice hand movements, and build basic comparison concepts.

Activity Name: Little Repair Worker
The main objective is to provide children with a toolbox containing items such as a toy drill, screws, and a screwdriver, allowing them to explore and operate the tools independently.
The teacher will first give a simple demonstration on how to use the tools, then let the children try to “fix” things on their own.
Through this activity, children can practice fine motor skills and hand–eye coordination, while also learning how to choose appropriate tools to complete a task. 🔧

💛 “Can you play with me?”
👩🏫: “I push the ball to you…”
👶: giggles “I push it back!”
✨ Back and forth…
Not just a ball, but the beginning of connection.
👩🏫: “Where am I?”
👶: pulls the scarf
👩🏫: “You found me!”
💫 That little smile…
That moment of surprise…
That’s how trust is built.
👩🏫: “Clap your hands!”
👶: tries… then claps
👩🏫: “Yes! You did it!”
🌱 They didn’t just play…
They learned to:
✔ Connect
✔ Cooperate
✔ Respond
From “me”…
to “we” ❤️
Because the first step into the world…
is learning how to play together.
28/03/2026
✨Tiny hands discovered big differences…
✔ Rough vs smooth
✔ Dry vs wet
✔ Falling vs flowing
Not just play…
But the beginning of understanding the world 🌍
From touching sand…
To feeling water slip through their fingers…
They are learning, exploring, and growing—one sensation at a time.

Our babies can be so inspiring! If we give them room.
Our babies need *opportunities* to try and then practice new skills, and our challenge is to keep remembering to slow down and be open to providing them. The benefits are obvious. Children love to “do it themselves”. Small moments of mastery and accomplishment help them cope with age-appropriate toddler angst and frustrations. The happiest, most self-confident babies are those who are respected as innately capable, encouraged to be active participants in their care (and life), and allowed to be achievers whenever possible.
I share all the details in my post Surprising Things Babies Might Do, which I’ve linked here: https://www.janetlansbury.com/2011/08/surprising-things-babies-might-do-if-given-the-chance/
