About nine years ago, I invited John Billing to Malaysia to present the country’s very first lyre concert. One of the pieces performed that evening was Still Water.
This quiet, meditative work was composed by the teacher himself especially for the lyre. The continuous overtones echo like ripples spreading across water. The music is as still as a lake, and in my heart, the image that arose was my hometown—the serene and picturesque Taiping Lake Gardens.
From that moment on, I carried a simple wish: how beautiful it would be to one day play this piece by the lake itself.
On that morning, clouds above Taiping Lake blossomed in the sky like flowers. As dusk approached, the weather remained clear and radiant. I began to play Still Water by the lakeside, letting the sound flow gently into the open air.
At twilight, white herons flew out from the Taiping Zoo, returning to their nests. As the music unfolded, they circled the trees on the lake’s island, moving in harmony with the sound. When the final note faded, they, too, disappeared into the distance.
Most touching of all was a large monitor lizard resting quietly by the shore, listening attentively from beginning to end without moving. At first, a black dog swam across the lake together with three other stray dogs, but in the end, only one remained. It sat gracefully in the front row like a VIP guest, listening with calm presence, and quietly left only during the intermission.
Next time, we hope to bring the lyre concert fully into the embrace of nature—
to be immersed together with all living beings, sharing the joy of that moment when music meets the natural world.
(May this beautiful moment be sent to John Billing, with our heartfelt wishes for his speedy recovery❤️💐🌈)
