Turns out, the hardest part of being a mother isn't the sleepless nights or the mess. It's managing your own emotions. 🌿

I once scolded my son so hard. He still ran into my arms after.

I used to think a mother's love was the hardest kind. Turns out, my son's love is the greatest.

Tag a mama whose child forgives faster than she forgives herself.

"No analgesic or equipment at all."

That was this mommy's answer when her friend asked how the birth went.

Best part? She was still AT WORK, in the hospital, when her surges started getting regular. Timed them herself with a contraction counter. Practiced her surge breathing between patients. Clocked out at 6pm, walked herself to the labour room.

6cm dilated. An hour to an hour and a half later — fully dilated. Baby out at 8:09pm.

The only part that didn't go according to plan? The directed pushing — because the nurses were bertungkus-lumus, so eager to help her push, that's the only "intervention" that snuck in. 😂 Everything else — no analgesic, no equipment — exactly as planned.

And daddy? So chilled throughout, she said, that it felt like a dream by her side.

Here's the part that gets me every time — this mommy works in healthcare. She sees births all day. And she still chose to prepare, intentionally, the HypnoBirthing® way. Knowing the medical side didn't make preparation less necessary. If anything, she knew exactly why it mattered.

Knowledge changes everything. Even for the ones who already know a lot.

Somebody once told her she'd love every single minute of motherhood.

She believed it. Fullstop.

Then came the birth she'd trained so hard for — calm, breath-led, exactly like she'd practiced. And then came the 3am nursery floor. The part nobody warned her about.

This one is for every mother sitting there right now wondering why it doesn't feel like the photos. It's not failure. It's just what it looks like to be human, with a newborn.

You don't have to enjoy every moment to be a good mother. You only have to keep showing up.

And if nobody has told you this recently — thank you. For showing up. You are probably doing far better than you think. 🤍

🌿 If this found you at the right time, and you're expecting or newly postpartum, Purpleseeds HypnoBirthing® classes are open for enquiries — the same breath she used at 3am is the same breath we teach for birth. Details and registration: [email protected]

The world keeps telling our kids that more is the goal. More toys, more grades, more everything.

Can I offer a quieter one instead?

Something I wish for your children today — that enough isn't settling. That enough is its own kind of full.

Teach them that early. It'll save them a lot of chasing later.

This one came in from Pennsylvania. Yes, that Pennsylvania — all the way in the US.

She messaged me after her birth: the knowledge from the class was what kept her going. Without it, she said, she would've given up long before the end and just asked for a c-section.

She held on to what we covered in class. Remembered it, and persisted.

Then she said the same thing happened with breastfeeding. She remembered everything Gina and I taught her — and persisted there too. Her own words after: she'd realised not many of her friends back in Malaysia managed to exclusively breastfeed, simply because nobody gave them the knowledge to hold on when it got hard.

That message filled my love tank. Made me a bit teary, if I'm honest. This — right here — is why I do what I do.

Whether it's your first baby or you're preparing for a better birth this time round, whether daddy is just as lost as you are about how to help — this is what the class gives you. Not a script to follow perfectly. Knowledge to hold on to when things get hard, because they will get hard, and that's when knowledge becomes the thing that keeps you going.

Classes run via Zoom, so wherever you are — Kajang or Pennsylvania — this reaches you.

"Why is it taking so long? Is something wrong?"

I hear this in almost every class. Usually from the partner, more than the mother herself. Somemore they Google "average labour hours" at 2am and start panicking over a number.

Here's the truth nobody explains properly: labour doesn't run on a stopwatch. Every body has its own rhythm — some open quickly, some take their time, layer by layer, and both are completely normal.

Long doesn't mean broken. It just means your body is doing exactly what it needs to do, at its own pace.

This is one of the biggest myths I bust in class — because when a couple believes "long = wrong," fear creeps in right when calm is needed most. And fear is what actually slows things down.

Trust the process. Trust your body. It knows what it's doing, even when the clock says otherwise.

𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐃𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐨𝐲

You bought the toy. The good one — the one with lights, sounds, the works.

They didn't want it.

They wanted your face.

Nobody tells you this part: your baby isn't just looking at you. They're reading you. Studying your eyebrows when you're stressed. Clocking the tightness in your jaw when you're overwhelmed. Watching to see — is it safe out here, or not?

And here's the truth — you don't have to be calm to be calming. You can be exhausted, running on four hours of broken sleep and yesterday's coffee, and still be the safest place your baby knows. Because what they're reading isn't perfection. It's warmth. It's "you're still here."

So today, put the toy down for a second. Let them read you instead.

You're already saying everything they need to hear.

You know the sound. That satisfying "shhhh" as the tea gets pulled from one cup to another, higher and higher, froth building with every pass.

One pull won't do it. Ask any mamak uncle — you don't get that thick, silky froth from a single stretch. It takes rhythm. Again, and again, and again. Each pull building on the one before it, until suddenly — there it is. Perfect teh tarik.

Contractions work exactly the same way, sayang.

One contraction isn't "labour not working." It's the first pull. The second one builds on it. The third builds more. Your body isn't struggling — it's working in rhythm, the way it was designed to.

So the next time you feel a contraction and think "is this even doing anything?" — remember the teh tarik. Trust the pull. Trust the rhythm. 🫖

Part of our Birth Makes Sense series — because sometimes, everyday Malaysian life explains birth better than any textbook.

Want to understand your body and your birth, contraction by contraction? Our next HypnoBirthing intake is opening soon, with RM288 off all packages — plus an extra RM50 if you enquire and register within 24 hours.

3:30am. Stomach pains. Bowel activity. A little bleeding.
She nudges her husband.
He mumbles something about a false alarm and goes back to sleep. 😂

Kan, this part never makes it into the pretty birth videos, but it's the realest part of the story.

Dr Mai Mai timed her own surges on a contraction tracker while husband snoozed on. Double-checked the hospital bag herself. By 6am, showered (twice — don't ask), they left for the hospital. 5-6cm dilated already. Baby out by 10:30am.

She even asked for cold coffee mid-labour to recharge. Shouted through the surges, yes — but also somehow dozed off halfway through. 🤣 Her words, not mine — "surprisingly manageable."

Her birth plan was simple, and every single box got ticked: delayed cord clamping, no episiotomy, skin-to-skin, immediate breastfeeding, no medical intervention, rooming in with baby.

Her own takeaway, and I'm just going to let her say it —
"𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐲 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐥. 𝐈𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝. 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧'𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐇𝐲𝐩𝐧𝐨𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐢𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞 𝐚 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐨𝐧𝐞."

That's it. That's the whole point of what we do here.

If frightening stories from friends (or Dr Google at 2am) have you anxious about birth — this is your sign.

Behind every mother who wants to give her children everything… there's a story we don't always talk about. 🌿

Some of us grew up knowing what it felt like to go without. So we work harder. Love deeper. Give more.

Not because we're chasing perfect. Because we want our children to have what we once wished for.

Tag a mama who's building something different for her kids.
