Confidence is an important foundation for speech development. When a child feels confident and comfortable, they are more willing to try new words, express their needs, and communicate with others. Building a supportive and encouraging environment helps children develop the courage to speak, practice their language skills, and gradually improve their communication abilities. π

Resonatory System (Sound Quality and Amplification)
The resonatory system modifies and amplifies the sound produced by the vocal cords.
Main Structures:
1. Pharynx (Throat) - A muscular tube located behind the nose and mouth.
Acts as a resonating chamber that shapes the sound.
2. Oral Cavity (Mouth) - The main space where speech sounds are shaped.
Helps modify voice into different speech sounds.
3. Nasal Cavity (Nose) - A hollow space inside the nose.
Adds nasal resonance to certain sounds.
Example of nasal sounds:
/m/
/n/
/ng/ (as in "sing")
4. Soft Palate (Velum) - The soft part at the back of the roof of the mouth.
Controls whether sound goes into the nose or mouth.
When speaking:
Soft palate raises β air goes through mouth (most sounds)
Soft palate lowers β air goes through nose (nasal sounds)
β
Function in Speech
The resonatory system gives quality and richness to the voice.

Phonatory System (Voice Production)
The phonatory system produces the basic voice sound.
Main Structure:
Larynx (Voice Box) -The larynx is located in the neck above the trachea and contains the vocal cords (vocal folds).
Vocal Cords - Two folds of muscle and tissue.
When air from the lungs passes through them, they vibrate.
This vibration produces voice or sound.
Glottis - The space between the vocal cords.
When speaking:
Vocal cords come together
Air passes through
Vibration produces sound
Example:
Sounds like /a/, /e/, /o/ are produced using vocal cord vibration.
β
Function in Speech
The phonatory system produces the voice that will later be shaped into speech sounds.

Respiratory System (Air Supply for Speech)
Speech begins with airflow from the lungs. Without air, speech cannot be produced.
Main Structures:
1. Lungs - The lungs store and release air.
During speech, air is pushed out of the lungs.
This airflow is the power source for voice production.
2. Diaphragm - A large muscle located below the lungs.
Controls breathing in and out.
Helps regulate the amount of air used during speech.
3. Trachea (Windpipe) - A tube that carries air from the lungs to the larynx.
Acts as the air pathway for speech.
β
Function in Speech
The respiratory system provides the air pressure needed to vibrate the vocal cords and produce sound.
