What do wars and negotiation have in common?

They’re both about achieving the best outcome—one that works for everyone involved. And while they may seem like very different processes, they have a lot of similarities. Here are three key takeaways from military strategy that can help you be more successful in your negotiations:

1. Choose win-win to truly solve the problem

In wartime, it can be tempting to focus on winning at any cost. But in negotiations, there’s no point in winning if it means you don’t get what you want or leave someone else empty-handed. Instead of looking for a way to “beat” your opponent, look for ways to find a solution that will work for both sides.

2. Don’t humiliate the enemy

Humiliation is never okay—whether it happens on the battlefield or at the negotiating table. You never want your opponent to feel like they were treated unfairly or as if they lost because they weren’t good enough or smart enough. This takes away from building trust between parties and makes conflict resolution much more difficult down the road.

3. Be patient

Finally, as with any negotiation, patience is key. You won't find the perfect solution right away—sometimes it takes time for ideas and feelings about an issue or problem to change. So give yourself some time before deciding on a course of action, and you'll be much better off in the long run!

As the world continues to heat up and we see more and more extreme weather, businesses have a responsibility to take action. Here are some actions that businesses can take:

1. Work toward carbon neutrality. This will mean offsetting your emissions with investments in renewable energy or other carbon-reducing projects, as well as reducing your emissions as much as possible.

2. Bring more innovation to the table! It's time to think outside the box when it comes to sustainability efforts—think about what would be an innovative way for your company to reduce its impact on the environment.

3. Drive your supply chains toward sustainability—and start by asking yourself what kind of effects your suppliers have on the climate because those effects often go far beyond their own operations.

4. Finally, work to change behaviors within your organization—and beyond! This can include anything from encouraging employees to walk or ride bikes instead of driving when they need to get somewhere nearby, to making sure that packaging is made from recycled materials or grown organically (or at least sustainably).

With the continuous increase in consumer prices, it's only fitting for our salaries to be equally competitive. What strategies can you take to successfully negotiate your pay?

1. Timing is key- Make your move during a time that follows a win you can claim e.g. a big deal that you closed etc. Avoid approaching your employer when they are busy or after a slip-up.

2. Job search, theoretically- See what salaries are offered in other places for your specific position. This can then help you calibrate your request.

3. Know the culture- Be mindful of using outside salary to get a raise as different companies have different cultures about this. They might work to close the gap or, help you pack.

4. Turn it around- If all else fails, try asking what you can do to make the request possible in the near future. Take the opportunity to also negotiate for other requests e.g. fewer responsibilities etc.

The need for sustainable business practices in today's day and age is mutually undeniable. In reality, the viability of business heavily depends on the resources of healthy ecosystems and on a stable society.

Yet, there is still little progress made by businesses the world over. The problem remains as it's generally cheaper to opt for non-sustainable sourced products.

Despite the higher cost, it does not translate to a higher price for consumers. Businesses are rarely obliged to compensate for the environmental impacts of their operations. With difficulties of these impacts to be gauged with any precision or fairness, their costs have remained external to businesses’ accounting.

Perhaps we can explore the possibility of those externalized costs being quantified and assigned. What if we could achieve a point where a cheap product does the least harm to the planet?

The consumers’ bargain-hunting buying behaviour would then align with responsible business practices. This too would put powerful market forces in the service of sustainability’s goals.

🇺🇸 US or China 🇨🇳- which of these trade giants have more influence on the ASEAN economy?

⚠️ It is a unanimous understanding that a do-nothing approach when it comes to environmental sustainability can cause more damage in the long term.

📈 With the renewable energy market set to reach $2.15 trillion by 2025, there is a vast market for businesses to move into when it comes to growth. So, why haven't more businesses gone down the sustainable path?

✅ According to Boston Consulting Group, implementing sustainability in business models and corporate governance can give businesses a lasting competitive edge as there is consumer demand for companies to adopt sustainability practices.

✅ Practicing sustainability can also attract the best talent due to millennials who are even willing to take a pay cut to work at an environmentally-friendly company.

✅ Having a strong sustainability strategy can also help bring new opportunities by driving companies into new markets.
