Do compost worms have a preferred food that they eat? We can see that certain types of waste are eaten faster than others, but that isn't an indicator of preference. We can also see that wastes such as animal wastes and vegetable/fruit wastes, also known as green wastes (high in nitrogen), are eaten faster than wastes such as spent mushroom substrate, also known as brown wastes (high in carbon).The scientific reason is the concentration and the amount of microbes (microbial count) in that particular waste. This is what attracts the compost worms. Researchers believe that they need the help of the microbes to break down the organic waste so that they can eat and take in nutrients. The faster the dissolution process, the more worms come into that area to feed. This is one of the reasons why we usually mix both green and brown wastes (carbon/nitrogen ratio C/N) to get the best possible result. Scientists have already confirmed the best ratio of C/N. That is why I inform everyone who attended my workshop that vermicomposting is an extension of composting where we introduce compost worms to speed up the process. 😉

During our workshops, we always start with; vermicomposting are an extension to composting. Why? The worms don't actually eat the organic waste we feed them. What they really eat are the breakdown of materials from the organic waste cause by the composting process and various organisms. Faster the breakdown process, more materials for the worms eat and faster they can produce vermicompost. 😉
