The premature death of bodybuilders, particularly those who use anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), is a recognized issue, with research indicating a high incidence of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in the professional community. Studies have found that male competitive bodybuilders may have a five times higher risk of sudden cardiac death compared to amateurs, with some studies showing an average age of death for elite competitors at 34.7 years.
Why They Die Young
The desire for "larger-than-life" physiques pushes athletes to use high doses of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) for prolonged periods. This lifestyle often causes "pathological" remodeling of the heart—different from the healthy "athlete's heart" found in endurance athletes—which causes the heart to fail.
