The Department of Media and Communication Studies UM is a leading media and comm. school in Malaysia.
The Department of Media and Communication Studies has been preparing graduates for the media industry for over four decades. The Department was first established in 1976 as UM's Creative and Descriptive Writing Programme, to train both aspiring and working journalists, as well as creative writers. The Programme was eventually upgraded into a Department in its own right in 1993, and renamed as the
Department of Media Studies which then expanded its course offerings to reflect the range of fields in the media industry of the 1990's. In 2018, in line with industry practices and academic trends in the field, the department is now known as the Department of Media and Communications Studies -- to meet industry demands and global academic trends. Since the 1990's, the Department has continually reviewed and enhanced its academic programmes to prepare talent for a fast-changing media landscape. Currently the Department's undergraduate programme offers courses including journalism, publishing studies, public relations, professional writing, new media, screen studies and broadcasting. The Department's newly released and highly popular Master of Media Studies programme offers fresh-graduates as well as working professionals broad-based training for our current media landscape. The Department's flagship Master of Arts (Publishing Studies) programme offers book enthusiasts and transmedia-industry aspirants and professionals specialized training in publishing. In addition to its course-work based programmes, the Department of Media and Communication Studies also offers full-research Masters and Doctoral programmmes. With nearly a dozen active supervisors expert in a range of interdisciplinary fields, the Department is one of the most popular departments among postgraduate research students.
