News Flash

On 20 August, the final day of the Global Smart Education Conference 2026 (GSE2026) in Beijing, our President/VC, Prof Dato’ Dr Ahmad Izanee Awang, and VP/Deputy VC (Learner Experience & Technology), Prof Datin Dr Santhi Raghavan, stepped beyond the conference halls to explore the innovations shaping the future of learning.

Jointly organised by Beijing Normal University and the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education, GSE2026 brought together education, technology, and industry leaders from over 60 countries.

The exhibition offered plenty to discover, from AI-powered platforms that adapt learning to individual progress and smart family-education technologies to intelligent campus systems designed to support safer, more seamless learning experiences.

For the OUM team, it was more than a walk through the exhibition. It was a chance to connect with innovators, exchange ideas, and discover technologies that could inspire the next steps in OUM’s digital education journey.

Yesterday, our President/VC Prof Dato’ Dr Ahmad Izanee Awang took the stage at the Global Smart Education Conference 2026 (GSE2026) in Beijing, China, to present “Future Learning Centres and Human-AI Collaborative Environments”, sharing a bold vision for what higher education can become.

His message was about reimagining learning centres as intelligent ecosystems where humans and AI collaborate. Guided by OUM’s philosophy of “Humanising Digital Education,” he reaffirmed that technology must serve people, not replace them. In this future, educators are not displaced by machines, but empowered to evolve into mentors, coaches, and ethical guides.

His closing words captured it best: “It is human intelligence, guided by wisdom, ethics, and compassion, that will determine why we learn and what kind of future we create.”

OUM Showcases AI-Driven Transformation at Global Smart Education Conference 2026

18th August, 2026 - Open University Malaysia (OUM) strengthened its presence in the global dialogue on the future of education when Prof. Datin Dr. Santhi Raghavan, Vice President / Deputy Vice Chancellor of OUM, presented “AI in Higher Education: From Disruption to Transformation” at the Global Smart Education Conference 2026 (GSE2026) in Beijing, China.

Prof Datin Dr. Santhi Raghavan opened with a provocative question - “Are we grading the student or grading ChatGPT?” before she unpacked how the educator's role is shifting from 'giver of knowledge' to 'learning designer and AI collaborator'. She showcased OUM's 360° AI-powered learner ecosystem (Enquiry, Learn, Research, Assess, Support), as well as the AI-assisted e-Customer Relationship Management system and Writing Feedback Plus (WF+).

Prof Datin Dr. Santhi also highlighted OUM's partnership with NetDragon Websoft in Fuzhou, spanning AI learning content, analytics and digital credentialing — all in service with one core message: humanising digital education. AI should enhance, not replace the human heart of education. After all, AI is artificial intelligence but we are the real intelligence.

For OUM, this defines what a future university can become in the age of AI. 🤝✨
