Following the strong response from our earlier session, we were pleased to host another round of focused discussions with Solar PV stakeholders.
As Solar PV and BESS adoption accelerates, power quality is becoming a key factor in ensuring stable, efficient, and reliable system performance.
This session centred on practical insights into measurement, performance optimisation, and reducing energy losses โ reinforcing the importance of going beyond installation.
Thank you to all participants for your continued engagement.
Driving better solar performance takes more than generation โ it takes collaboration.

Installing a Solar PV system is only the first step.
โWhat challenges are you facing after PV installation?โ
- Frequent tripping and system instability
- Difficulty meeting grid and compliance requirements
- Integration challenges with existing electrical systems
As Solar PV adoption continues to grow, the focus must go beyond installation. Achieving stable operation, compliance, and optimal performance requires deeper visibility and a clearer understanding of how solar interacts with the overall electrical system.
This is a critical step towards delivering more reliable, efficient, and high-performance solar solutions.

Todayโs networks are shaped by non-linear loads โ variable speed drives, data centres, EV chargers, and power electronics โ all contributing to increasingly complex harmonic signatures across the system.
Yet, many measurement practices still stop at the 50th harmonic order, creating critical blind spot in modern operations.
Higher-order harmonics โ often dismissed or simply unmeasured โ can introduce:
* Additional thermal stress on transformers and cables
* Interference with sensitive electronics and control systems
* Reduced effectiveness of conventional filtering solutions
When these components remain outside your visibility, power system behaviour becomes harder to explain and control.
What is not capturedโฆ is not analysed. And what is not analysedโฆ is not managed..
At PQE Power System Sdn Bhd, we believe accurate data is the starting point of every reliable and suitable solution.
Extending harmonic analysis beyond conventional limits enables:
โ Deeper understanding of true system conditions
โ More precise mitigation strategies
โ Improved long-term reliability and asset performance
In todayโs ever-growing electrical landscape, measurement boundaries should not define system understanding.
See beyond the standard. Measure what truly matters!

Due to overwhelmingly positive response from our previous session, weโre opening a second session focused on power quality in solar PV systems. โ๏ธ
As solar adoption grows, so do the practical challenges surrounding integration, stability, and system performance.
This session is designed for solar providers to exchange insights on how power quality considerations can support better outcomes; not just in installation, but in long-term power system's power quality and performance. โก

With increasing system complexityโVFDs, solar integration, and non-linear loadsโrelay performance can drift without obvious signsโฆ until a false trip or failure occurs.

Protection curves are not a single point.
Testing across multiple injection points ensures your relay responds correctly across real operating conditionsโnot just one setting.

A relay that trips is not enough.
It must trip within the correct time windowโtoo fast or too slow can both lead to coordination issues, equipment damage, or unnecessary shutdowns.
โ ๏ธ Todayโs risk isnโt just failureโitโs misoperation.
Incorrect settings, ageing components, and system changes can silently compromise protection.

Every switching event engages contactors, reactors, and stepped capacitor stages, generating..
- Contact arcing
- Thermal cycling
- Introduce harmonics from VFD-driven motors, EV chargers, and solar inverters
- Dielectric stress, reactor saturation, and switchgear fatigue accelerate, quietly eroding system reliability.
This is a design flaw in relation to our modern day power system demand response. Step-based capacitor banks assume loads are slow-changing and linear, but modern electrical systems are dynamic, non-linear, and digitally controlled. When your reactive power compensation depends on consumable electromechanical components, predictable failure isnโt just likely; itโs engineered into the system.
The consequences?? Voltage excursions, nuisance breaker trips, harmonic amplification, and power factor penalties increase OPEX, strains downstream equipment, and shortens the lifecycle of inverters, transformers, and switchgear.
Systems that fail โon scheduleโ silently degrade overall power quality while giving operators the illusion of normal operations.
Solution! Modern loads demand solid-state, real-time reactive power solutions that handle rapid load transients without mechanical bottlenecks or built-in failure points. If your capacitor bank still relies on stepped stages, contactors, and reactors, itโs already obsolete in todayโs dynamic power system landscape.

Harmonic measurement standards have evolved โ but field practices are lagging behind. โก
While earlier benchmarks focused on 50th harmonic orders, decades have passed and modern international expectations now extend to 100th as per UK Engineering Recommendation G5/5.
Yet many marketed power measurement tools remain configured to outdated standards..
The question is: are we comfortable making decisions based on outdated visibility & measurement tools?

A focused session on Mastering Power Quality in Solar PV Systems.
As solar PV systems and related technologies such as BESS' adoption accelerates, power quality increasingly determines how efficiently energy is delivered, utilised, and sustained across the end users' power systems. Solar PV systems' power generation is innovativeโ but like all real-world systems, performance depends on how well limitations are understood and managed.
This session brought solar PV system stakeholders together to explore practical measurement insights, performance optimisation, and collaborative approaches to reducing energy losses.
Maximising solar efficiency works best when industry partners work together.
Thank you again to all participants for your valuable engagement and contributions!
