Personal Reflection: The First Time

I am grateful for the course of Social Engagement, let me have a lot of the first time. This course gives me a chance to make a contribution to society. Originally, we can experience the joy of visit the Orang Asli’s primary schools in Pahang for the first time and teaching Mathematics to the students. However, unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic blocks our plan. Therefore, we are forced to change our project to design the Mathematics teaching materials for the students.

This is my first time to preparing Mathematics teaching materials for the Orang Asli of SK Kota Perdana Muadzam Shah and SK Runchang Muadzam Shah. Actually, I love math and this is the subject in which I can get the A in primary school and secondary school. At this time, I not a student anymore, I need to be a teacher to teach the students how to do the Math. This makes me start to worry. This is because as time passes by, I almost forget how to do the math now.

However, this will not make me give up. This is because this is a chance given by my lecturer and classmate to choose me to be a leader. This is my first time to be a leader in the group. Therefore, I need to be brave, to be creative, to be… as best as I can. I try my best at the role of the leader. In this position, I learned a lot of things and also let me grow up a lot.

Through doing the PowerPoint, let me know that be a lecturer is very hard. I just do a PowerPoint for Grade 5 students only, my brain was crashed. I need to think about how to make the PowerPoint be interesting, be colorful to catch the students' eyes, and make them an interest in math. The most important thing is students can gain their math knowledge through our PowerPoint.

This course not only giving me the opportunity to contribute to society but also taught me a lot of skills, like improve my leadership, problem-solving ability, analytical skills. I believe that these skills and experiences will help me to overcome the challenge in the future.

I once again thank my lecturer, my teammates, and those who support our activity people. Thank you all. And I hope that SK Kota Perdana Muadzam Shah and SK Runchang Muudzam Shah students can get your flying color in your exam.

Project reflection – Things are not just about Maths

At first, we are all excited in joining this program as the faculty announced that our social engagement project will be visiting the Orang Asli’s primary schools in Pahang and having a teaching or sharing session with them. We are all expected this will be an exhausted yet meaningful, joyful, and memorable moment in our lifetime. However, the Covid-19 pandemic disrupt our plan hence we are forced to change our project plan to design the Mathematics teaching materials for those students.

Design materials based on their syllabus is not a big deal but the real issue is how to make them interest in study Mathematics. We had a brainstorm to make the lesson is not bored and could always attract the students’ attention. Here we come the things we have to be expert while designing the teaching materials —— PPT design skill.

From our information, we understand that the students have low interest to learn Mathematics. Therefore, the PPT must not full of words in a slide yet the information have to be clear enough for the students. Pictures, GIFs, Animation effect and Transaction effect are required to make the PPT looks like a fantastic video. Throughout this event, I have improved my PPT design skill as I learn how to control the animation plane to make the pictures start animated without clicking, and it is successful to make the PPT looks more advance.

Also, we designed a storyline to make the students feel like he or she is having a “Mathematics adventure” with cute animation characters instead of just study or reading through the chapters and complete the exercise. While we are putting a lot of efforts in PPT designing, I realized that teaching material PPT have taken so much time to make it perfect. I recall that almost every teacher needs to be skilled in PPT design as they need to show PPT in teaching lesson. I would like to pay all my respect to the teachers as always doing this uneasy task.

Besides, I learned that teamwork is very important in doing the project. Without teamwork, we might not be able to finish our teaching materials on time yet ensure our work is good enough to be present. I feel really grateful to my teammates that give high commitment to finishing the project.

As an assistant director for this project, I am able to develop my leadership skill by allocate the works fairly and giving clear instruction to the committee. Moreover, I advance my poster design skill while preparing the FB post for our Social engagement. I feel proud for our FB page could reach 172 likes at the end which show that we have a lot of supporters that looking forward to our teaching materials.

What I may conclude for this project mean to me is, things are not just about Mathematics. Although we could not hold a big project, we are still able to learn new things and always be grateful to all the resources we have. I believe that this experience can also help me to overcome the challenges in the future.

At last, I hope that our teaching materials could help the students enjoy Mathematics learning and be able to increase their interest in Mathematics. I hope that they will be led to a better tomorrow after they study well in Mathematics. Wish them all the best in the future.

Reflection: New Norm, New Experiences

To be honest, I was worried about the challenges that we might have meet while doing the project during this unprecedented time. Fortunately, everyone of us put our heads together in order to ensure this social engagement project run smoothly. Otherwise, this would definitely be a difficult task for me since Maths was not my cup of tea back in my primary school time. This project experience is worthwhile as it would be further developed and utilized in our life and future career. Everything starts from the scratch and little by little. Now, we’re proudly to share our experiences and learning outcomes with you!

I’m glad to have this opportunity to participate in this project. Undeniably, Maths is one of the essential subjects in primary education. However, there are students who struggling and fall far behind their peers in Maths. Based on my experience, interest was the key element that need to be fostered in learning Maths. Therefore, I have prepared maths questions which could engage students by linking the Maths concept with the real-world context around them. As an effort to grab their attentions, I used some animation pictures to motivate them in learning Maths. In addition, I realized that how many efforts that my previous Maths teachers did to help us in learning Maths as the process really took time.

In the nutshell, I hope our project could help the students to be more familiar with Maths in early ages. As we know, Maths is fundamental to the academic achievements and important in our life. Last but not least, I have to express my gratitude to Dr. Lau Su Kia in helping and guiding us throughout this process.

Project reflection: To help the children, is to create better tomorrow

Due to Covid-19 pandemic, our original plan for Social Engagement Project -- Visit primary school in Pahang have been force to cancel. This is actually quite bad news for me as I really wanted to meet the childrens in school. However, fortunately we can still do something for them which is produce Mathematics questions for them.

Based on the Mathematics teachers, we know that Orang Asli childrens are not interested in Mathematics, they think that this subject is a bored subject. This really make me concern as we need to produce Mathematics questions which will attract them.

After a lots of consideration, I decided to use the way of story telling to produce the Mathematics questions. When my teammate and I get the approval from our instructor, we started our works. From looking for interesting story and background photo, to design every questions. We need to make sure the questions we design is based on their Mathematics level, so we refer to Mathematics text book and exercise book.

This journey is really fun and motivated, as our childrens are our country's future. To help them in their learning, equal to help the country to build a better tomorrow.

It has been an awesome experience for me since I have learned a lot during the whole process. In conclusion, I hope the students will enjoy the materials we prepare for them, and also to help the teachers to have new materials.

Together, we build better tomorrow for our country.

𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐔𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐝💕

First, I thought that doing a social engagement task would be fun because it is a chance for me to go to a place and stay there for 3 days 2 nights with my classmates to do community service. Unfortunately, the primary plan which is “to school service” had been changed into preparing Mathematics teaching material for primary students in SK Runchang and SK Kota Perdana due to the Covid-19.

In the new plan, I was in charge of preparing the Mathematics teaching material that designs for students in standard 1. The language we used is Malay because we heard some of their background from my lecturer and since Malay is their mother tongue, they must be more familiar with Malay.

It looked like preparing the teaching material for standard-1 students is as easy as ABC, but when I go through the preparing process, it’s not as easy as you think. This is because other than teaching, we still need to construct an interesting model to ensure that they are interested to learn it. So, we not only want to think about what basic knowledge we want to prepare, we also need to think about the level of the question, games even the idea in designing PPT.

However, I found that I am enjoying the process of preparing notes and questions in PPT. I have spent a lot of time searching for some attractive images that related to the topic because I hope they enjoy learning. 😁

In brief, as I reflect back, I gained ample experience and lessons during the preparation process. Hope the teaching materials we have prepared can help them find interest in learning Maths. 🥰

Personal Reflection: A Meaningful Commitment

Social engagement is to engage ourselves into the needed community. I personally think that It is a great platform for the university students to take part and make contribution to the society.

So, the plan was entering primary schools: SMK Kota Perdana and SK Runchang, which located in one of Malaysia’s largest states——Pahang and conducting a series of education related activities for the students, to motivate them in their studies. However, an unforeseen situation happened. The viral of Covid-19 left us with no choice, but to call off the plan.

Well, there is a cliché saying ”when life gives you lemons, make lemonade”. Since we could not make it to the school in person, we could design teaching plans and teaching materials instead! We worked in cell groups. And I was put in charge of the Primary 6’s Mathematics Chapter 1 to 4 questions.

For references, we went on online websites to search for reliable sources, details on the syllabus, past year questions, and simple chapter notes to gain an in depth understanding with the chapters covered. After collecting all the data needed, we met up via online meeting room to work on the theme as the bits of sprinkles to the teaching materials.

After prompt discussions, the theme of “animals” was finally set. This was because personified animals are greatly welcomed by people of all ages, including primary school students. Other than being amused by the charms of the animal characters, the students could also be able to gain simple moral values through the characters. For that, we added in simple story lines to the chapters.

By asserting personified animals in Maths questions, we wanted to provide a platform for the students to have a clearer concept about each chapters. Our motive was having the student to be engaged in the application of Mathematics world through the series of customized questions.

The process of preparing the questions were quite challenging, yet interesting. I got to refresh on the very basic calculating steps in Maths. I also had the opportunity to refine my softskills and technical skills. From all of this, I could relate that teachers’ job was never an easy job. I was deeply reminded that all educators should be respected as they work dedicatedly for better future and generations.

Specially thanks to our supervisor, Dr Lau Su Kia who willing to spend time to guide and motivate us throughout the process. Thanks to my coursemates and my team members who worked as one in despite of their packed schedules with assignments.

In the nutshell, although we have spent massive time for the preparation, I believe that great satisfaction comes from sharing with others. Being able to involve in education related community service has been truly fulfilling. As for the outcome, it might not be as perfect, but we sincerely hope that students could gain benefits from our work.
