“Mum, sit down. I’ll do it.”

We often say this out of love. But after years of caring for seniors, I’ve learnt that stepping in too quickly can sometimes take away their chance to try.

Slower doesn’t always mean unable.

Before helping, ask: “Would you like to try first?” or “Shall we do it together?”

At our daycare, encourage our seniors to do what they can, at their own pace, with support nearby when needed.

We need to trust and give them a chance to say that they can do it.

Still want lah. The wish to see new places doesn’t expire at 60 or 70. 😊

I understand why families worry. Can Mum walk that far? Will Dad get tired? These are sensible questions. But before we say, “Better stay home,” let’s ask what would help them enjoy the trip comfortably.

To me, travelling gives our seniors something lovely to look forward to. Somewhere to go, something different to try and new stories to bring home. Otherwise, we keep asking, “Anything new?” when every day looks the same!

There’s also the company. Sharing a meal, laughing with friends, discovering that someone else also wants to stop for ice cream. These little moments are part of enjoying life too.

Of course, the pace matters. Choose a trip that suits their health and mobility, with time to rest and support where needed. Even a short outing close to home can be a welcome change.

That’s why Senior Travel is part of what we do at Oretha’s. I believe growing older should still leave room for curiosity, friendships and a good day out.

So next time Mum or Dad mentions travelling, try asking, “Where would you like to go?” ❤️

“My father says he doesn’t want to go to daycare.”

I hear this quite often from families, even when they can see their parents enjoying the activities and benefiting from the experience.

My advice? Don’t try to convince them straight away. Ask, “What made you feel that way?”

Sometimes, “I don’t want to go” isn’t really about daycare. They may feel shy, out of place, or worry that going to daycare means losing their independence.

Even the word “daycare” can feel uncomfortable. Try calling it a Senior Club, Kopitiam Club, or simply a place to meet friends and enjoy the day.

Focus on what they might enjoy. A familiar face, an activity they liked, or simply having somewhere to go during the week.

And give them some control. Let them choose the day, start with fewer days, or arrange another short visit. One trial is only one day. It takes time for a new place to feel familiar, and friendships don’t happen overnight.

Tell our team what your parent enjoys, dislikes, and what helps them feel comfortable. The more we understand them, the better we can welcome them.

So, respect their first “no”, but don’t close the door just yet. Give them time, reassurance, and another chance to find their place.

Over the past seven years, I've had the privilege of meeting hundreds of seniors and their families.

People often ask me what I've learnt from this journey.

The truth is, the most valuable lessons didn't come from books or training. They came from the everyday moments when I was listening to a senior share a story they've told many times before, seeing a daughter leave with tears in her eyes on the first day, or watching someone who was once quiet slowly find joy and friendship again.

These moments have changed the way I see ageing, caregiving and what it truly means to care for another person.

This carousel isn't about what Oretha's does.

It's about what the seniors and families who have walked through our doors have taught me over the last seven years.

If you're caring for an ageing parent, I hope these reflections remind you that you're not alone. And if you're still navigating this journey, know that asking for support isn't a sign of giving up. By acknowledging that you need help is often one of the greatest acts of love.

Thank you to every senior and every family who has trusted us to be part of your journey. You've shaped Oretha's Senior Care into what it is today, and for that, I will always be grateful.

Last Saturday, seniors from Oretha’s Senior Daycare Cheras enjoyed a day out at Farm Fresh at UPM, a full travel experience complete with transportation, lunch and, of course, yoghurt ice cream! 🍦

There was plenty to see, lots of laughter and good company throughout the day.

We like curating activities beyond the norm at the centre. We arrange outings that give our seniors new experiences, encourage social connection and add more enjoyment to their routine. We were thrilled to see them smile and what's more satisfying is to get messages at the end of the trip from their children telling us what a great time their parents had! Woowee!
