EMAN (Experimental Medicine & Advanced Natureceutical) Laboratory is located in School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia. The laboratory stems from the collaborative research effort of University of New South Wales, Australian National University, University of Queensland, Monash University, University of Western Australia, University of Oxford, King Saud University, University
of Jordan and Universiti Sains Malaysia. The core strength of EMAN is on angiogenesis research with strong emphasis on cancer drug discovery derived from botanical and synthetic compounds. The laboratory was founded by Dr Amin Malik Shah Abdul Majid a PhD graduate from University of New South Wales, Australia. EMAN places strong emphasis on developing drugs that will benefit the bottom billions which synchronises with the core philosophy of Universiti Sains Malaysia. EMAN focuses on drug development from natural products and chemical compounds derived synthetically. The laboratory acts as a node that links many laboratories and research institutes throughout the world to facilitate drug discovery and development. Via these network and linkages EMAN helps to optimise the use of existing resources for research. This approach helps to cut down the cost of drug discovery and development which will ultimately make the drugs developed to be more affordable to the end users. In EMAN we have experts in synthetic compounds, biologics and natural products. We also have expertise in variety of disease models. Our panel of experts includes clinicians, pharmaceutical scientists and drug manufacturers. EMAN also helps in training and educating secondary and tertiary students in Malaysia and other parts of the world. We have helped to transfer cutting edge research technologies to a number of public research institutes present in the country and abroad. SCOPE
EMAN focuses on drug development targeting angiogenesis. This is a process of new blood vessel development which when distorted can cause a variety of diseases. Faulty angiogenesis process is to be blamed for the diseases that are affecting more than one billion people worldwide. This includes all forms of cancers, arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, cardiovascular disease, blindness, psoriasis, complications of AIDS, diabetes, and more than 70 other major diseases affecting children and adults in developed and developing nations. EMAN collaborates closely with the Ministry of Agriculture Malaysia to help to improve the take home income of the rural communities under the Government Transformation Program (GTP) by the federal government of Malaysia . Through this program EMAN helps to educate and train farmers in the rural area on how to grow herbal products that conforms to the pharmaceutical industry requirements. By complying with the industry standard farmers are able to sell their products at premium. This ensures steady demand for their harvest which can fetch higher market price.
