Our School

SMK Gajah Berang was built by the British during 1956 and was opened on the 9th of January, 1956. Our school was originally named Gajah Berang Secondary Modern School which was later changed to Gajah Berang Secondary English School (GBSES). It is now called Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Gajah Berang ( SMKGB ). The school is located about 1.5km away from Melaka city centre. The name of ou

r school was originated from the road on which it is located. The area of the school is approximately 7.5 acres. The first principal of our school was Mr. Tan Gim Ann who served our school since its inception until 1958 with the help of the 5 founders, Mr. Oomen, Mr. Tan Teng Chee, Mr. Narayanan and Mr. Yoong Cheong Pin. During the first few years, the principal and teachers faced many challenges such as lack of classrooms, lack of a sports field, and the students had to be content with playing only table tennis and chess. In the early stages, there were 150 boy pupils and 6 teachers. The school only consisted of 6 classrooms housed in a single building block. Currently that building still stands and is used as our school library.

This is the block of my 5 Sc 2 classroom back in 1978. Went back to GBS with Ying Rui to collect her textbooks and buy some reference books & stationery from the Koperasi.

*As a GBS old boy, I'm nostalgic about my secondary school which I attended for 6 years in the 70's. This page was created with my ideas and input of information many years ago. I took over this page as the admin since my wife Lim Lay Yuen passed away in September. She had been serving there for about 17 years.

Should I just delete this page for good?
