1. Boksing Siam, Tomoi atau Muay ialah tiga nama yang diberikan bagi merujuk sukan tempur dari Thailand.
2. Di Kelantan, penduduknya memanggil Muay Thai sebagai Boksing atau Muay (dibaca mu-wei). Jarang sekali ada yang menyebut Muay Thai seperti yang selalu kita dengar di negeri lain.
3. Sejarah kewujudan boksing Siam di Kelantan sukar untuk dipastikan dengan jelas, namun menurut sejarawan, seni ini wujud sejak ratusan tahun lalu ketika negeri di utara seperti Kedah, Perlis dan Kelantan masih di bawah pengaruh Siam.
4. Perkataan tomoi sendiri berasal dari perkataan Siam, iaitu toi (tumbuk) dan moi (seni bertumbuk).
5. Bagaimanapun kita tidak akan mendengar orang Thai menyebut Muay Thai sebagai Tomoi tetapi hanya muay.
6. Muay Thai di Thailand mula menjadi sukan untuk tontonan sejak ratusan tahun lalu sebelum kewujudan peraturan dan glove lagi.
7. Ketika itu petinju cuma memakai tali hem (kaad cheuk) dan bertarung di hadapan raja tanpa apa-apa peraturan.
8. Pada 1929, peminat Muay Thai no.1 Thailand, Raja Prajadhipok mula memperkenalkan gelanggang berbentuk empat segi sama, glove dan jam penentu masa untuk perlawanan.
9. Teknik tinju seperti tumbuk lurus (jab), tumbuk sauk (uppercut) dan tumbuk cangkuk (hook) diserap dalam Muay Thai untuk menjadikannya lebih menarik.
10. Kedudukan (stance) Muay Thai sebelum ini yang mempunyai kekuda rendah juga mula hilang apabila petinju lebih senang berdiri tegak sambil kaki hadapan sentiasa dihenjutkan.
11. Pertarungan Muay Thai moden mula diadakan pada tahun 1945 selepas siapnya Stadium Rajadamnern di Bangkok.
12. Latihan juga semakin sistematik apabila petinju mula belajar teknik pernafasan, regangan, dan rawatan kecederaan.
13. Punching bag juga diperkenalkan bagi menggantikan batang pisang dan batang pinang.
14. Pao (thai pad) dicipta bagi membantu jurulatih meningkatkan stamina dan melatih kepantasan kaki petinju.
15. Belly pad (pao tong) juga dicipta untuk membantu jurulatih mengasah ketepatan tendangan kaki dan lutut petinju semasa latihan bersama-sama.
16. Focus mitt yang selalu digunakan dalam sukan tinju Barat juga digunakan bagi melatih koordinasi mata dengan tangan.
17. Tali lompatan (skipping rope) turut digunakan tetapi dengan sedikit pengubahsuaian kerana menggunakan getah yang tebal.
18. Glove juga diubahsuai untuk memudahkan petinju bergelut rapat (clinch) dengan tepi yang bersudut dan span yang lebih keras.
19. Walaupun sukan ini semakin diterima di negeri sebelah pantai barat, dominasi petinju dari Kedah dan Kelantan masih belum mampu digugat.
20. Oleh sebab kedua-dua negeri ini bersempadan dengan Thailand, Muay menjadi sukan tontonan utama di setiap daerah dan menjadi aktiviti masa lapang anak-anak muda.
