Sometimes we get so caught up in the hype of having our pupils put forward arguments, play very straight-forward language games just so that they can seem to be on their feet and actively participating during lessons, we lose sight on what's also important.

The rare moments of silence with only the scratching of pencils on papers when the kids are busy trying to pen down their thoughts, the rustling sound of pages being turned, and the reading corner packed with pupils quietly transporting themselves through place and time, exploring different worlds. ❤️

There's a myth that good teachers never have bored students. Or that the only way to captivate kids is to make learning fun all of the time.

Instead, I think we should be aiming for inspired learning- learning that is relevant, challenging, and arouses curiosity. That sometimes happens when the classroom is loud and full of energy, but it also arises in quiet rooms with open books and thoughtful lessons.

So instead of asking, "Are they entertained?", maybe ask, "Are they engaged?"

Class of 2021/2022,
When you first arrived aged seven,
I wasn’t there to hold your hands.
I wasn’t there to welcome you with open arms.
I wasn’t there to wipe away your tears
For the fear of the unknown.

When you turned nine,
I was given the chance to be there.
I was there when you learnt your ABC’s,
I was there when you formed new friendships,
I was there when you laughed, cried, played.
And created wonderful memories.

As graduation year drew closer,
Things changed into anything but normal,
Lessons were conducted online,
Faces were covered with masks,
Desks were one metre apart,
But we carried on.

And now here you stand
As elementary graduates,
Definitely a little taller,
Hopefully a little wiser,
Thankfully a little happier.
Congratulations, you made it!
