Why is December 22 called the Winter Solstice?

The Winter Solstice marks the onset of winter, at the time of the shortest day, about 22 December in the northern hemisphere and 21 June in the southern hemisphere.
After December 22nd, the days will begin to get longer and the nights shorter.

Why is the Winter Solstice so important?

Since prehistory, the Winter Solstice has been a significant time of the year in many cultures and has been marked by festivals and rituals.
It marked the symbolic death and rebirth of the sun; the gradual waning of daylight hours is reversed and begins to grow again.
