KUCHING, 8 August 2026— A research team from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) has gained recognition at the 24th Asian Congress on Occupational Health (ACOH) for its study on obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) among healthcare workers.

The study, titled “A Study on the Knowledge of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA), Its Risks, and Work Performance Among Healthcare Workers in UNIMAS”, was led by Associate Professor Dr Dayang Suhana binti Abg Madzhi, together with co-authors Dr Ayu Akida binti Abdul Rashid and Dr Azie Nur’Auni binti Shbini from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UNIMAS.

Supported under the UNIMAS PILOT Research Grant Scheme, the research examined knowledge and risk of OSA, as well as work performance among healthcare workers.

OSA is a chronic sleep disorder characterised by recurrent upper airway obstruction during sleep and remains substantially underdiagnosed. Among healthcare workers, the condition is particularly relevant due to its potential effects on daytime alertness and cognitive function, with possible implications for workplace performance and patient safety.

The research was presented by Dr Azie Nur’Auni, a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) candidate at the Faculty, at the congress held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK). Her presentation received Third Place in the Best Student Oral Presentation category.

The recognition reflects the collaborative effort of the UNIMAS research team and adds to the growing body of occupational health research addressing sleep-related health concerns among healthcare workers.

The team hopes the findings will contribute towards greater awareness, early identification and continued research on OSA within the healthcare workforce.
