On 8 September 2026, the Centre for Social Innovation (CSI) hosted a meeting with the HalalPreneur Association Sarawak at the ISITI Meeting Room from 8.30 a.m. to 12.00 noon.
Representing CSI were Associate Professor Dr. Halikul Lenando, Director of CSI, and Puan Inson Din, CSI Entrepreneur Fellow. The HalalPreneur Association Sarawak was represented by Sharifah Norlaila Binti Wan Mohammad, President; Ir. Ts. Haji Abg Asri Bin Arifin, Vice President; Awang Mohd Najib Bin Awang Chee, Secretary General; and Malia, Honorary Treasurer.
The meeting provided a valuable platform to explore potential areas of collaboration between CSI and HalalPreneur Sarawak. A key focus of the discussion was how the mission and aspirations of HalalPreneur could be strategically aligned with the expertise, knowledge, and resources available within CSI and the wider UNIMAS community.
Particular attention was given to how both organisations could work together to strengthen community awareness, understanding, and positive perception of halal. The discussion went beyond halal certification and compliance, recognising halal as part of a broader ecosystem that connects entrepreneurship, consumer confidence, education, technology, innovation, and community well-being.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of creating stronger networks between academia, halal entrepreneurs, industry players, and communities. Such connections could provide opportunities for knowledge sharing, capacity building, research, innovation, and the development of community-focused initiatives.
Several potential initiatives were discussed during the meeting. These include possible programmes related to halal awareness and education, community engagement, entrepreneurial capacity building, research and innovation, technology adoption, and networking among HalalPreneur members and UNIMAS experts.
The meeting marks an encouraging first step towards developing a meaningful partnership between CSI and HalalPreneur Sarawak.
The potential initiatives discussed will be further refined and are subject to the appropriate consideration, approval, and mutual agreement of UNIMAS and the HalalPreneur Association Sarawak.
Through this potential collaboration, CSI hopes to bring together university expertise, entrepreneurial experience, and community knowledge to create initiatives that are relevant, inclusive, and sustainable.
