Dear IIUM Community,

We invite everyone to read the articles and submit yours for the next issue.

ARTICLE 2 HIGHLIGHT: Evaluating the Suitability of ATR-FTIR Spectroscopy for Screening Suspected Microplastics (MPs) in Human Breast Milk (HBM)
Imagine trying to detect tiny plastic particles far too small to see with the naked eye in one of the most complex biological fluids, human breast milk.

Sound concerning? You're not alone in wondering about this.
Microplastics have been found in soil, water, food, and now increasingly in human biological samples, including breast milk. But testing for them in something as complex as breast milk is far from straightforward. This study explored whether a common lab technique, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, could reliably detect microplastics in human breast milk after a careful digestion and filtration process.
The Findings:
1. Several polymer signatures were detected in the samples, including polypropylene (PP), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), and chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSPE), commonly found in packaging, textiles, and industrial materials.
2. Match scores for these detections ranged from 0.42 to 0.55, considered low to moderate confidence, well below the widely accepted thresholds for reliable identification.
3. Some polymer signatures, like PVDF and CSPE, also appeared in the control samples, suggesting they may have come from lab equipment or airborne contamination rather than the breast milk itself.
4. Breast milk's rich lipid and protein content made it difficult to get a clean signal, since residual organic matter can interfere with accurate polymer detection.
The Takeaway:
1. This study demonstrates that ATR-FTIR is a useful first-step screening technique, but it should not be used alone to confirm the presence of microplastics in human breast milk.
2. Because some results may reflect contamination rather than true findings, results should be interpreted with caution and treated as preliminary rather than confirmed.
3. Stronger contamination control, better spectral libraries, and complementary techniques like Raman spectroscopy or pyrolysis-GC-MS are needed to build more reliable methods for detecting microplastics in complex biological samples like breast milk.

"Hijrah is not merely a journey through time, but a journey towards Allah."

The arrival of a new Hijri year is often marked by the turning of a page on the calendar. Yet the significance of Hijrah was never about counting days or marking dates. It was about courage in uncertainty, conviction in the face of challenges, and unwavering trust in Allah's plan.

The Hijrah reminds us that progress is not measured by how far we have travelled, but by how faithfully we remain committed to our purpose. It is a timeless lesson that every meaningful transformation begins with sacrifice, perseverance, and reliance upon Allah.

As we welcome 1448H, may we reflect on our own journeys. Let us leave behind habits that distance us from Allah, uphold values that strengthen our faith and character, and strive to draw closer to Him through our words, actions, and service to others.

May this new year inspire us to move with purpose, live with integrity, and continue our journey towards Allah.
