In Chengal Preschool, we take Reading Development seriously.
Our target goes beyond ability to decode the shapes of letters to their respective sounds, but also the love of reading and ability to comprehend what they read. Research shows that READING FOR PLEASURE is a single most important indicators of success.
This process is a marathon and not a sprint.
To develop a lifelong reader that read for pleasure, Reading Readiness preparation actually start since the children still in the wombs.
Look at how colorful the stages involved in the preparation of Nurturing Lifelong readers compares to common understanding.
These stages can't be skipped. If we skipped the stages, the process of reading will become so rocky that cause the children to hate reading.
Development happened through exposure, and not through their biological age. Ie. a child can be a 4 year old with a development of 1 year old if he did not received necessary stimulations during the prior years.
Thus, if the children that came to Chengal Preschool is still not exposed to the stimulation needed in the previous stages, we have to work together with parents to work on intervention needed.
Transforming the our families culture on reading readiness.
We received many feedback from our parents that since they applied our recommendation in their family with younger siblings, the younger siblings seems to be more advance in their development. This is something that we are really thankful for. The chance to change families culture. Hope it ripples to their extended family as well.

1. Check in with Yourself and Brush Up on the Facts 🧐
- Before talking to children, ensure you understand the basic elements of the conflict. Focus on facts, not opinions.
- Your emotional readiness matters. Children pick up on your reactions.

2. Focus on Empathy and Create a Safe Space ❤️
- Kids under 6 may not fully grasp the complexities of the conflict. Keep their environment free from fear.
- Be cautious of the images they're exposed to, as graphic content can impact their development.

3. Be Proactive About Starting the Conversation 🗣
- Children might have already heard about the conflict from school, news, or adult discussions. Waiting for them to initiate might lead to misunderstandings.
- Use open-ended questions like, "Have you heard what's happening in the world?" to encourage them to share their thoughts.

4. Kids Can Handle Tough Topics 🧠
- Children, even young ones, can engage with complex issues. Provide age-appropriate historical context.
- Explore the region's history, including the Ottoman Empire, British promises, Sykes-Picot Treaty, Balfour Declaration, Treaty of Versailles, and Jewish migration to Palestine during the WW2 Holocaust.
- Avoid oversimplification and teach them not to equate actions of individuals or groups with entire populations.

5. It's Okay Not to Have All the Answers 🤷
- Acknowledge that it's okay not to know everything. Children are often seeking guidance on how to navigate a complex world.
- Encourage their imagination and belief in a better future. Children have a unique ability to see hope in challenging situations.

Where, it is not about how much As on our certificate that matters, but how can we manipulate the knowledge that we have for the benefits of our community, nation and the world.
It is not about how good we look, but it is about how we bring ourselves; ie. Our Communication Skills, Our Critical Thinking, Our Grit.
It is no more about how you stand on top of other, but it matters more and how many people's benefits from us.
How much lives we change.
It is about creativity.
It is about innovation.
It is about collaboration.
And human brain is actively developing this skills in our first 6 years of lives.
And all of these could not be achieved by putting the children on the desk.
And all of these could not be achieved by restraining them from talking.

It is our function as adults around children to LISTEN to the children. Not just with our ears, but really listen with ourselves; our body, our eyes, our skin and with our own personality.
In Chengal Preschool, we LISTEN beyond their words as we understand children's words are still limited.
When children said they are "shy", we looks beyond the words and sometimes see, "shy", mean "scared" or sometimes it means, "I'm overwhelmed", or sometimes it means, " I need sometime to warm up".
When children said they are "lazy", we looks beyond the words and sometime find that lazy mean, "I' sleepy", or sometimes mean "I am tired", or sometimes it can means, "my core is under developed, so sitting straight is tiring for me", or sometimes it means, "my find motor skills, my grasp, my visual perspective is still developing, thus writing is very hard for me".
We listen to them within their experience, the cultural background, their family's value.
It is important for us adults to hear them out deeply beyond our cognitive thinking, and see the feelings behind their words. As their words can be wrongly choose but their feeling is always true.
Let us give them our Empathetic Listening, and supporting them, make them feel safe and confidence, because only them real LEARNING can happens.
Only them CREATIVITY flourish.
