CI UMPSA Welcomes ILAS-CASS Delegation

25 September 2026 | Pekan, Pahang

The Confucius Institute at Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (CI UMPSA) welcomed a delegation from the Institute of Latin American Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (ILAS-CASS), during its official visit to UMPSA.

The delegation comprised Dr. YANG Zhimin, Chief Expert of the ILAS-CASS Innovation Program, Executive Director of its Mexican Research Center and Professor at the University of CASS; Dr. HONG Chaowei, Associate Research Fellow in International Trade; and Dr. WANG Song, Assistant Research Fellow in International Trade.

Discussions explored cooperation in vocational education and skills training, academic and cultural exchange, and research, including the development of the China–Malaysia Chinese Plus Vocational Skills Regional Development Center (Malaysia).

The visit provided an opportunity to strengthen ties between CI UMPSA and ILAS-CASS and explore future cooperation that benefits Malaysia and China.

CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE UMPSA CELEBRATES MID-AUTUMN CULTURAL FESTIVAL 2026

PAYA BESAR, 25 September 2026 – The Confucius Institute (CI) at Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) organised the Mid-Autumn Cultural Festival 2026 at Dewan Tun Fatimah, UMPSA Paya Besar, as part of its ongoing efforts to introduce and promote Chinese culture and traditions within the university community through engaging and interactive activities.

The programme brought together 69 participants, comprising UMPSA students, international students, and mobility students from Liuzhou Railway Vocational Technical College (LRVTC), China.

The programme began with a welcoming address by the Director of Confucius Institute UMPSA, Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Lee Khai Loon. In his speech, he welcomed all participants and highlighted the importance of cultural programmes in providing opportunities for interaction and fostering greater cross-cultural understanding among students from diverse countries and backgrounds.

One of the main highlights of the programme was the lantern-making activity, which provided participants with an opportunity to learn about one of the cultural elements associated with traditional Chinese celebrations while creating their own lanterns.

Throughout the session, participants took part in various activities, including:

* A brief introduction to the Mid-Autumn Festival and its cultural significance;
* An introduction to the traditions and symbolism of lanterns;
* A demonstration of the lantern-making process;
* A hands-on DIY lantern-making activity;
* Decorating and personalising lanterns using participants’ own creativity;
* Cultural interaction and sharing among local, international, and mobility students from China; and
* A photography session featuring the completed lanterns.

The lantern-making session created a lively and engaging atmosphere, allowing participants to interact and work together while experiencing elements of Chinese culture firsthand. The programme also served as a platform to strengthen friendships and cultural exchanges among UMPSA students, international students, and LRVTC mobility students.

The celebration concluded on a cheerful note with a Lucky Draw session, where selected participants received prizes.

The organisation of the Mid-Autumn Cultural Festival 2026 reflects Confucius Institute UMPSA’s continued commitment to promoting greater understanding of Chinese language and culture while encouraging cross-cultural interaction and strengthening people-to-people ties between Malaysia and China.

Director of Confucius Institute of Maranatha Christian University Indonesian Visits CI UMPSA

To deepen exchanges and mutual learning among Confucius Institutes in Southeast Asia and expand cooperation networks in Chinese language education and Chinese cultural dissemination, on September 16, 2026, Kang Zhenguo, the Chinese director of the Confucius Institute at Maranatha Christian University (Maranatha CI) in Indonesia, visited the Confucius Institute at Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (CI UMPSA), launching a week-long exchange and visit program.

CI UMPSA warmly welcomed Director Kang's visit. During discussions, both sides held in-depth talks on the practical operations of Confucius Institutes, focusing on topics including management models, Chinese curriculum development, planning and implementation of cultural activities, local teacher training programs, “Chinese +” teaching approaches, and future opportunities for multilateral collaboration.

Director Kang shared the achievements of CI of Maranatha Christian University in Bandung regarding Chinese language instruction, local teacher development, and promotion of Chinese culture. He also introduced practices in designing Chinese courses tailored to the Indonesian community and organizing cultural events. He noted that Indonesia and Malaysia share geographical proximity and cultural affinities, and their Confucius Institutes face similar opportunities and challenges in overseas Chinese education. He expressed hope that through this on-site exchange, he could learn from CI UMPSA’s experiences and broaden his own perspectives.

Prof. Li Lijun of CI UMPSA provided an overview of the institute’s operations and shared practical cases in curriculum development, HSK exam administration, distinctive cultural programs, and corporate Chinese training initiatives. He also engaged in extensive discussions with Director Kang on pressing issues such as local teacher development and resource sharing. Both sides agreed that Confucius Institutes across Southeast Asia should strengthen horizontal collaboration, learn from one another, share teaching resources and event plans, jointly enhance regional Chinese language education quality, tell China’s stories effectively, and solidify the grassroots foundation of people-to-people exchanges between China and Indonesia, as well as between China and Malaysia.

UMPSA Confucius Institute Participates in National Chinese Cultural Exchange and Festival in Melaka

The Confucius Institute at Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) participated in the 2026 Malaysian Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms Chinese Cultural Community Promotion Exchange, hosted by the Confucius Classroom at Pay Fong Middle School, Melaka.

The Confucius Institute at UMPSA was represented by its Director (Malaysia), Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Lee Khai Loon, and Director (China), Professor Dr. Li Lijun.

The programme brought together representatives of Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms from across Malaysia to exchange experiences and good practices in Chinese-language education, community cultural activities, local heritage promotion and intercultural engagement. The discussions emphasised the importance of bringing culture beyond classrooms and campuses by connecting it meaningfully with local communities.

Following the exchange programme, participants attended the 41st Malaysian National Chinese Cultural Festival at Encore Melaka. The festival, themed “Blessings of Heaven and Humanity, Illuminating the Mountains and Rivers” (天泽人道，山河皓照), celebrated the historical development, cultural heritage and collective identity of the Malaysian Chinese community.

The official ceremony began with a welcoming address by Mr. Piong Yew Peng, Chairman of the Festival Organising Committee, followed by an address from Dato’ Lim Kah Chuan, JP, Deputy President of the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Huazong). The Right Honourable Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia, subsequently delivered the officiating address and officially launched the festival.

A major highlight was “Shan He Chang Ge” (A Long Song of Mountains and Rivers), an immersive theatrical production involving cultural organisations, performing groups and artists from across Melaka. Presented through music, dance, drama and multimedia storytelling, the production traced the journeys of early Chinese settlers who crossed the seas, established new lives and contributed to the development of Malaysia’s multicultural society.

The performance was structured around four chapters—“Arriving with the Wind,” “Blessings of Heaven and Humanity,” “Passing the Torch” and “Dancing Towards a New Future.” These chapters portrayed the experiences of migration and settlement, the perseverance of earlier generations, the transmission of cultural heritage and the community’s aspirations for a shared future.

Enhanced by Encore Melaka’s immersive theatre technology—including a 360-degree rotating auditorium, water and mist effects, movable stages and projection mapping—the production took the audience on a powerful journey through history, memory, identity and cultural continuity.

The participation provided a valuable platform for strengthening cooperation among Malaysia’s Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms while reaffirming their shared commitment to language education, cultural appreciation, community engagement and closer people-to-people connections.

UMPSA, UMPSA Advanced and CCHET Explore New Strategic Opportunities

Representatives from Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) and UMPSA Advanced held an official meeting with the leadership and team of Chengdu Chinaedu Hui-Learning Education Technology Co., Ltd. (CCHET) to explore new opportunities for strategic academic and professional collaboration.

The UMPSA delegation was led by Professor Ts. Dr. Kamal bin Yusoh, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), accompanied by Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Lee Khai Loon, Director of the Confucius Institute at UMPSA.

UMPSA Advanced was represented by Dr. Ahmad Johari bin Mohamad, Chief Executive Officer; Mr. Azlizal bin Abu Bakar, General Manager of Finance and Supply Chain; Mrs. Haizatul Akma binti Md Hanafiah, Manager of Lifelong Learning; Associate Professor Dr. Mohamad Shaiful bin Abdul Karim, Internal Auditor and Director of the Quality Verification Centre, UMPSA; and Mr. Mohd Anuarul Faiz bin Mohamad Dahalan, Manager of the TVET Centre.

A key focus of the meeting was the proposed development of a 2+0 coursework-based Master’s programme. Both dual-degree and single-degree models were considered, with the single-degree model identified as a practical starting point. Chongqing University of Technology was proposed as a potential university partner for this initiative.

The parties also explored a 3+0 PhD programme delivered through a hybrid model, featuring specialised supervision by Chinese professors. This arrangement would broaden access to postgraduate education while strengthening academic collaboration, joint supervision and knowledge exchange between Malaysia and China.

Potential programmes discussed included Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering with a petroleum focus, and Oil and Gas Facilities Maintenance. These programmes are intended to address industry needs by developing professionals with specialised technical knowledge and practical competencies relevant to the energy and oil and gas sectors.

The meeting further highlighted the importance of obtaining the necessary formal authorisation to demonstrate the parties’ commitment to the proposed collaboration. Such authorisation would provide an official framework for CCHET to facilitate stakeholder engagement and advance the proposed programmes and related initiatives.

UMPSA and UMPSA Advanced expressed their sincere appreciation to the CCHET team for its invaluable support, thoughtful coordination and warm hospitality throughout the official visit. The engagement further strengthened Malaysia–China educational cooperation and laid a solid foundation for sustainable and mutually beneficial initiatives.

Afeef Hamizan Secures Third Place in the Top 30 Round of the 25th Chinese Bridge Competition

FUJIAN, CHINA, 24 August 2026 – Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) student, Afeef Hamizan, has once again made Malaysia proud by securing third place in the Top 30 round of The 25th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students, held in Fujian, China.

Afeef Hamizan was the only participant representing Malaysia in the prestigious competition, which brings together international students from various countries to showcase their Mandarin proficiency and understanding of Chinese culture and society.

Earlier, Afeef successfully advanced to the Top 30, earning the opportunity to compete in the subsequent round in China. His achievement marked a proud moment for UMPSA and Malaysia, particularly in promoting Mandarin language proficiency and international cultural exchange.

Securing third place in the Top 30 round further demonstrates Afeef’s dedication, commitment and ability in Mandarin, as well as his talent on the international stage.

UMPSA and UMPSA Advanced Strengthen Academic Collaboration with SCAVC

A delegation from Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) and UMPSA Advanced conducted an official visit to Sichuan Aerospace Vocational College (SCAVC) to strengthen academic cooperation and explore new collaborative initiatives.

The SCAVC delegation was led by Professor Zhou Lin, Vice President of SCAVC, together with Mr. Song Ke, Dean of the School of Intelligent Manufacturing, and Ms. Jiao Yibing, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Department.

UMPSA was represented by Professor Ts. Dr. Kamal bin Yusoh, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), and Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Lee Khai Loon, Director of the Confucius Institute at UMPSA.

UMPSA Strengthens Strategic Collaboration with Tianjin University

TIANJIN, 14 September 2026 – A delegation from Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), comprising Prof. Ts. Dr. Kamal bin Yusoh, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, and Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Lee Khai Loon, Director (Malaysia) of the Confucius Institute, paid an official visit to Tianjin University (TJU) at its Peiyangyuan Campus.

The delegation was welcomed by Prof. Ming D**g, Vice President of TJU; Prof. Weng Zhe, Vice Dean of the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology; Wei Youxiang, Deputy Director of the Office of International Cooperation; and Liu Wenwei, Vice Dean of the School of International Education.

The meeting explored TJU’s preliminary interest in establishing jointly supervised dual-degree Master’s by Research and PhD programmes in selected engineering disciplines, including the relevant academic, residency, examination, financial and administrative requirements. Both parties also discussed TJU’s potential partnership and logistical support for the Global Student Leadership Summit, themed “Redefining Future Leaders Through Value-Based Leadership,” scheduled for 18–20 December 2026 in Tianjin.

The programme included visits to TJU’s teaching and research facilities, an engagement session with UMPSA students, and an academic lecture delivered by Prof. Ts. Dr. Kamal bin Yusoh, further strengthening academic, research and student mobility cooperation between the two universities.

Confucius Institute UMPSA Successfully Conducts the Seventh HSK and HSKK Examination of 2026
PEKAN, 13 September 2026

Confucius Institute at Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) successfully conducted the seventh Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) examination session of 2026 at the CI UMPSA Chinese Test Centre.

The examination was conducted under the supervision of Professor Li Lijun, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute, who served as the Chief Invigilator. He oversaw the entire examination process to ensure that all procedures were carried out smoothly, systematically, and in accordance with the established examination standards.

The morning session involved two candidates sitting for the HSK Level 2 examination. One candidate was from Sekolah Menengah Imtiaz Yayasan Terengganu (SMIYT) Kuala Terengganu, while the other candidate was from ASSB Company.

The afternoon session continued with the HSK Level 1 examination, which involved 27 students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Perempuan Methodist Kuantan. The examination provided the students with an opportunity to assess and demonstrate their Mandarin language proficiency in accordance with the internationally recognised HSK assessment framework.

The successful organisation of this examination reflects the Confucius Institute UMPSA’s continued commitment to providing high-quality Chinese language education and internationally recognised examination services to learners from diverse educational and professional backgrounds.
