SEATRU is an acronym for the Sea Turtle Research Unit of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). The unit had its beginnings in 1984 when research on the leatherback turtles of Rantau Abang was first initiated by the then Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia. Sea turtle research at UMT has since developed into a multi-disciplinary program aimed at studying all aspec

ts of the biology and ecology of sea turtles, threats to their survival, and how they can be managed in order to restore the various species to a stable population level. The vital information resulting from these studies have formed the basis for many important recommendations made by SEATRU to relevant government agencies for the conservation of sea turtles, especially within the state of Terengganu. Besides carrying out conservation-oriented research on sea turtles, SEATRU is also directly involved in education of university students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, school children, and the public at large on the conservation of sea turtles. It also undertakes consultancy projects which are directly or indirectly related to sea turtles.

Happy Birthday to Abang Mann, the longest-serving turtle ranger with SEATRU and one of the true pillars behind sea turtle conservation at Chagar Hutang Turtle Sanctuary.

Behind every successful research project, conservation programme, student training, volunteer experience, and scientific achievement at Chagar Hutang, there is a dedicated individual working quietly in the background to ensure that everyone is safe, supported, and well looked after. In one of the most remote parts of Redang Island, far from the comforts of everyday life, Abang Mann has always been the person we can rely on.

Many people have come and gone over the years, but Abang Mann has remained steadfast in his commitment to protecting this special beach, where sea turtles emerge night after night to nest. He has not only cared for the turtles, but also for the countless researchers, students, volunteers, and visitors who have had the privilege of working and learning at Chagar Hutang.

Only Allah can truly reward the kindness, dedication, and sacrifices of this unsung hero, who has devoted so much of his life to conserving one of Malaysia’s most precious natural treasures.

On this special day, we pray that Allah blesses Abang Mann with good health, happiness, continued strength, abundant blessings, and many more meaningful years with his beloved family.

Please join us in wishing Abang Mann a very Happy Birthday and in keeping him and his family in your prayers. Thank you, Abang Mann, for everything you have done for us, for the turtles, and for Chagar Hutang.

8 JUN: HARI LAUTAN SEDUNIA
