As children, teachers and parents embark on an exploration of the language of paint in our newly opened studio, colours seen with new eyes begin to take on new life. The children’s sensitivity to shades expands as they mix and use their colours to paint some of the natural pinks found in our garden.
A (3y11m), carefully matches each of her shades to the flowers she sees. H (4y1m), grapples with painting his spiky and cylindrical flower, arriving at a completely unique perspective. “Pinkish Superhero” says F (4y1m), naming his newly created colour.
In the process, pink breaks out of its heavily gendered box, bold and unapologetic for all to enjoy equally.

The marks that children make might look to adult eyes as nothing more than random lines and squiggles. But in fact, scribbling is an important pre-literacy skill that builds the foundation for many other skills they will develop as they learn to write.

When children are able to look at words and read them out, it may appear that they have cracked ‘reading’ and are well on their way to becoming skilled readers. However, a large proportion of children, teens and even adults continue to struggle with reading because ‘sounding it out’ represents only a small subsection of the many skills good readers use.

The approach to teaching young children to read is often rote based and driven by checklists and curriculum that are designed by and for adults. However, research shows that words and letters are best learned in contexts that are meaningful to children and enable them to make deep connections, rather than in isolation.

A gentle reminder for anyone who needs to see this: reading success in later life does not depend on how early your child starts.
In fact, the premature emphasis on letter and word recognition takes young children away from spending time on the many other age appropriate skills that are foundational to later reading success.
