Microplastics found in a third of surveyed fish off the coasts of remote Pacific Islands 03/02/2026

A new study reveals that around one-third of coastal fish in Pacific Island Countries and Territories contain microplastics, with Fiji recording contamination rates of nearly 75 percent, well above the global average.

Researchers warn that the findings pose serious risks for Pacific communities that rely heavily on fish for food, livelihoods and culture.

🗣“This data shatters the illusion that our remoteness offers protection and provides the evidentiary basis we need to demand a Global Plastics Treaty that enforces strict caps on plastic production.” - said Dr Rufino Varea

Beneficial health effects and possible health concerns of tea consumption: a review 28/01/2026

💡 Tea can improve your health and longevity, but how you drink it matters

Drinking tea, particularly green tea, is linked to better heart health, improved metabolism, and lower risks of chronic diseases like diabetes and cancer. It may also help protect the brain and preserve muscle strength as people age. However, processed teas, such as bottled and bubble varieties, often contain sugars and additives that may cancel out these benefits. Moderation and choosing freshly brewed tea appear key.

Beneficial health effects and possible health concerns of tea consumption: a review The health effects of tea made from tender shoots of tea plant (Camellia sinensis) have been studied extensively. This review article assesses the evidence for the health effects of tea consumption in humans, using results from studies in animal models and in vitro

Microbes may hold the key to brain evolution 26/01/2026

💡Microbes may hold the key to brain evolution.

First-of-its-kind study offers evidence that microbes from different primate species influence physiology in ways linked to brain size and function.

Creative talent: has AI knocked humans out? 26/01/2026

💡 Researchers tested AI against 100,000 humans on creativity

AI can beat average human creativity — but the most imaginative minds are still unmistakably human.

A massive new study comparing more than 100,000 people with today’s most advanced AI systems delivers a surprising result: generative AI can now beat the average human on certain creativity tests. Models like GPT-4 showed strong performance on tasks designed to measure original thinking and idea generation, sometimes outperforming typical human responses. But there’s a clear ceiling. The most creative humans — especially the top 10% — still leave AI well behind, particularly on richer creative work like poetry and storytelling.

Creative talent: has AI knocked humans out? Can artificial intelligence rival human creativity? A large-scale study compares 100,000 humans with leading generative AI models.
