“You are doing all this alone?” Asked Dato Seri Michael Tio on the phone.
—— a lesson in leadership.
Grateful that call came about 7 weeks before our 800-pax 30th Anniversary event. After I presented updates, he asked, “You are doing all this alone?”
I explained we had to keep day-to-day ops going, so I asked the team to focus on sales and guest outreach while I oversaw everything else. He said “ok” and hung up.
The next minute, his head of corporate comms & strategy called. Dato Seri had mobilised his comms team to take over planning, creatives, and ex*****on — and deployed 20+ staff & students to assist on event day.
This team, filled with passionate, experienced event people (𝒇𝒚𝒊, 𝑰 𝒏𝒐 𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒓 𝒆𝒏𝒋𝒐𝒚 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔), executed brilliantly — planning, chasing us for updates, handling media and making sure things were on point. 🙏
Leadership isn’t about being in charge — it’s about taking care of those in your charge.
Bad leaders assign tasks without thinking about team capacity, then expect top results. That leads to burnout, resentment and possible catastrophic results.
Great leaders don’t just ask for updates, they ask:
“Do you have everything you need to do this well?”
“What support do you need from me?”
“Are you ok to do this?”It’s knowing your team’s limits and providing what’s needed to succeed. Most importantly when needed, they do the work.
