Weekly wrap - The markets were negative this week, with the S&P 500 down -2.4%, the Nasdaq -2.5%, and the Dow Jones -2.7%. Heading into Friday, the benchmark S&P 500 was actually positive for the week and was fresh off another record close, achieved on Wednesday. Market participants had largely shrugged off the continued U.S. government shutdown. However, the major indexes all fell sharply after Trump’s social media post on Friday that reignited tariff fears and hinted at potential renewed tensions between the US and China. President Donald Trump accused China of "hostile" export controls on rare earths and said the U.S. would impose an additional 100% tariff on products from China.

On the economic front, the continued government shutdown disruptions could lead to further data delays. Assuming reports are released as scheduled, we will face a heavy slate of high-impact updates: inflation, retail sales, and the long-awaited jobs report.

On the earnings front, we will have the big banks reporting first. 35 companies from the S&P 500, including JPMorgan, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, TSMC and ASML are expected to release their quarterly results.
