What happens when teachers step into the wider world of social impact?

For Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD), the MTP 2026 externship was a two-way exchange of learning, perspectives and experiences.

From 1–4 September, three MTP 2026 Fellows spent time with the YSD team, gaining a closer look at how social impact initiatives are shaped and delivered, while learning more about communities, project partners and good governance. The Fellows also brought positive energy, fresh perspectives and a strong sense of purpose, giving the YSD team a deeper appreciation of teachers’ dedication to shaping future generations.

The externship also created space to explore how teachers’ own ideas can be supported and turned into meaningful action.

From 1 to 4 September, three MTP 2026 Fellows stepped into the world of social impact and philanthropy with Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD), gaining new perspectives on how organisations work with communities, partners and stakeholders to create meaningful change.

As part of the MTP Fellowship, the externship gave Fellows an opportunity to learn beyond the education system and understand the social impact ecosystem including how a philanthropic organisation operates, how funding decisions are made, and the processes put in place to ensure resources are directed towards creating the greatest possible social good.

They explored how organisations understand community needs, assess opportunities, work with partners, and measure and sustain impact.

The experience also created space for the Fellows to reflect on their own roles as educators and leaders. Teachers are often closest to the needs and opportunities within their schools and communities. Understanding how organisations like YSD work creates a bridge between these on-the-ground insights and the resources, expertise and partnerships that can help turn ideas into greater impact.

This is what makes learning beyond the usual settings such an important part of the MTP Fellowship: expanding how teachers see their role as leaders, partners and contributors to the wider ecosystem.

From 10 to 14 August, the MTP 2026 Fellows stepped beyond the classroom and into the wider education system, meeting the people and institutions behind the policies, systems and decisions that shape what happens in schools.

The week began with the Fellows engaging with various divisions and institutions within the Ministry of Education (MOE), including the Educational Planning and Research Division (EPRD), Daily School Management Division, Malaysian Examinations Syndicate, and Curriculum Development Division (BPK), alongside the English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC) and Aminuddin Baki Institute.

Across these engagements, Fellows explored different dimensions of the education system, from policy development and implementation to English and Mathematics education, national assessments and the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2026–2035.

The Fellows also had the opportunity to meet and engage in conversation with YB Fadhlina Sidek, Minister of Education, creating space for meaningful exchange and a closer understanding of the priorities shaping education in Malaysia.

Just as importantly, the Fellows were able to share their own experiences and ideas, bringing perspectives from their schools and communities into conversations at the system level.

For us, this is what makes the externship such an important part of the MTP Fellowship. Leadership does not stop at leading a school. It is also about understanding the wider system, seeing how different pieces connect, and recognising the contribution teachers can make to shaping it.

We are deeply grateful to the Ministry of Education for opening its doors and creating such a unique opportunity for our Fellows to learn, engage and contribute. Experiences like these help bring the Fellowship’s vision of developing teachers as system leaders to life.

Behind every learner who moves forward is a teacher who chooses to keep finding a way.

For International Literacy Day, we’re highlighting Cikgu Kalaichelvi Jayamohan, a remedial teacher at SJKT Jalan Fletcher, Kuala Lumpur, and a Top 5 Finalist of the Malaysia Teacher Prize 2024.

For Cikgu Kalai, helping students learn begins with understanding what they need. When some of her students struggled with attendance, family challenges and basic reading, writing and numeracy skills, she looked beyond the classroom to support them.

Through targeted programmes, close collaboration with parents, and creative learning materials, she adapts her teaching to meet students where they are.
The results speak for themselves. Attendance improved to 90%, while many students gained the skills and confidence to move into mainstream classrooms. Some have even returned as reading mentors for others.

Cikgu Kalai’s story reminds us that when every learner is given a way forward, more becomes possible.

Whose story gets told, and what happens when we take the time to listen beyond the version we already know?

The 2nd Malaysia Teacher Prize Thought Leadership Series brought together educators, academics, policymakers, civil society leaders and advocates to explore the realities between what policy says, what teachers experience and what the public sees.

Across the conversations, one idea came through clearly: understanding often begins when we look beyond the surface. Listening to different perspectives, asking questions and seeking context can challenge assumptions and help us see the gaps between policy, practice and public perception.

We are grateful to our speakers, panellists, partners and everyone who contributed to the conversation, including Timothy Tiah, Prof Dr Stefanie Pillai, Dr Zuridah Hanim , and Sunway University’s School of Education.

At PEMIMPIN, we believe stronger education systems are built when we make space for different voices, listen closely to lived experiences and remain open to having our assumptions challenged.

What does it take to lead across education systems?

PEMIMPIN is honoured to be part of Education House @ UNGA 81, bringing our perspectives and experiences from Malaysia into a global conversation on education system leadership.

Together with Harvard Graduate School of Education and Fulbright Malaysia, we will be hosting a conversation on Leading Across Systems: Developing the Capacities for Education System Leadership on 22 September in New York.

The session brings together Professor Fernando Reimers, Ford Foundation Professor of the Practice in International Education at Harvard Graduate School of Education, Samuel Isaiah, Executive Director of PEMIMPIN, and Aeti Abdullah, Executive Director of Fulbright Malaysia.

Together, we will explore how graduate education, leadership development programmes, and international exchange can complement one another in developing leaders who can navigate complexity, work across institutions and communities, and contribute to lasting improvement across education systems.

We’re excited to share what we have learned through our work in Malaysia, and to learn alongside the 32 collaborations and 120 organisations coming together at Education House this year.

Merdeka is more than a celebration of how far we’ve come. It is also a reminder of the role each of us plays in shaping where Malaysia goes next.

In every classroom, teachers are helping young Malaysians learn, grow, and find their place in a changing world. Through their dedication, they are not only teaching lessons, but helping shape the people who will carry our country forward.

As we celebrate 69 years of Merdeka, may we continue to nurture a Malaysia built on learning, resilience, unity, and the belief that every generation has the potential to make a difference.
