Mahashivaratri - the auspicious night of Lord Shiva was celebrated at the London Sevashram Sangha on Monday 7th March. It was an all night programme with worship, devotional songs in praise of Lord Shiva and a talk by Swami Nirliptananda explaining the origin of the Shivalinga and Mahashivaratri.
According to the Shiva Puran an incident took place when Lord Brahma visited Lord Vishnu. Brahma was displeased because he was not respectfully welcomed. After an argument and were about use celestial weapons that would destroy the whole universe, a shaft of Light appeared in between the two. It was a huge light and they decided to use it to prove how was greater.
Lord Vishnu took the form of a boar and ploughed the earth to find the bottom and Brahma took the form of a swan and flew upwards to find the top. Whoever is successful would be greater.
On the way Brahma saw a flower coming down an d he asked, “hey! Where are you coming from”. Ketaki, the most beloved flower of Lord Shiva replied, “I am coming from the top of the Lingam”.
Brahma: “how far more do I have to go to get there”?
Ketaki: “Well. I do not think that you will ever be able to get here”!
“Can you do me a favour”? asked Brahma. “When we get down, I will say that I had reached the top and you will agree”.
When they got down they found that Vishnu did not find the bottom of the Lingam. Brahma claimed that he had reached the top and Ketaki agreed.
At that moment Lord Shiva appeared and said, “Brahma you have told an untruth and from today no one will worship you and Ketaki, you will no longer be my favorite flower”.
The rishis and devas gathered and worshiped Lord Shiva who said, This night will be my favorite Night and it will be known as Mahashivaratri”.
