"Graduates Must Meet Industrial Needs"

KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 (Bernama) -- The gap between graduates' knowledge and industrial needs must be addressed by industry players and educational institutions so that graduates can meet the needs of all industries, says a prominent corporate figure.

SapuraKenchana Petroleum executive vice-chairman Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir said many well known universities produced graduates but most did not have what was needed to excel in their careers.

"The main problem was students or graduates had little or no hands-on knowledge of the industry they had chosen," he said when met after launching International Islamic University Malaysia's DBA Student Association (Ideas) in Gombak near here, Saturday.

"There is high demand for engineers in the oil and gas industry but not many graduates are willing to get their hands dirty but instead prefer office work."

Mokhzani said Ideas came at the right time when most industries are experiencing shortage of human resource.

"Ideas will help to nurture, celebrate and promote future business leaders both in local and global market, prepare them with everything they need in the industry."

Meanwhile, Ideas patron Dr. Aahad Osmangani said there are 36 DBA students at IIUM and are specially selected for the the programme.

"We want only the best students and with Ideas, the students are able to interact with industry players, CEOs, and Board of Directors to get a better idea of the business industry," he added.
