Professional Learning #3 | ISLES Collaborative 28/01/2026

Join us for our next Professional Learning event: Safeguarding Every Student: Applying the GSC School Safeguarding Framework in Diverse School Communities with Belinda Nicholson and Jonah Rosenfield.

Effective safeguarding systems must be inclusive, responsive, and designed to meet the diverse needs of all students. In this highly practical workshop, participants will explore the Global Safeguarding Collaborative's School Safeguarding Framework, a comprehensive, flexible, and user-friendly tool used by international schools worldwide to design, review, and strengthen their safeguarding systems.

Recently updated to better reflect inclusive and neuro-affirming practice, the Framework now more effectively supports schools in safeguarding neurodivergent students and other learners with diverse needs. Through guided exploration of the Framework and the accompanying Self-Assessment Tool, participants will actively assess their own schoolโ€™s current practice, identify strengths and gaps, and develop clear next steps for improvement. Participants will leave with concrete strategies, practical tools, and a clear roadmap for advancing their schoolโ€™s safeguarding journey.

A wonderful two days spent for the ISLES From Students To Systems retreat. Bringing together leaders of student support and school data analysts, participants looked at the use of data to evaluate our impact in schools. International school contexts vary greatly dependent on demographics and curricula, and yet we face many common challenges. The questions we posed and the discussions we had around them provided opportunities for all to reflect on applications for their own setting.

ISLES will launch its Professional Learning series with a workshop on co-teaching and Universal Design for Learning (UDL), led by Pam Tupy of Novak Educational Consulting. Pam has spent the past 25 years making public education more inclusive, more collaborative, and a whole lot more human. With experience in both elementary and secondary classrooms and a deep background in special education Pam has taught, co-taught, and coached her way through nearly every corner of the system. Her passion? Helping educators create classrooms where every student feels seen, supported, and challenged.

๐Ÿ’ก Learn the fundamentals of co-teaching, including six research-based models and key conditions for success.
๐Ÿ’ก Discover how to apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to co-teaching to create a more inclusive and responsive classroom.
๐Ÿ’ก Explore practical strategies to combine educator expertise, reduce learning barriers, and offer students, including Multilingual Learners, various ways to engage and demonstrate understanding.
๐Ÿ’ก Reflect on your mindset to better leverage the cultural and linguistic assets students bring to the classroom.
๐Ÿ’กStrengthen your co-teaching partnership and learn to support all learners, whether you are new to the practice or looking to refine your skills.

ISLES Professional Learning events are hosted four times a year, and are open to ISLES Members, Community, and colleagues and friends of ISLES!

This school year has been filled with successes and valuable learning opportunities for all of us. As leaders in student support, it's important to take a moment to celebrate our achievements and share the strategies that have brought us here.

We invite all leaders of student support to join us for our final ISLES Connect event of the year. This is not only our annual AGM, but also a great chance to learn from one another, especially since many of us are the sole representatives in our roles within our schools.

Let's come together to connect, share insights, and continue to strengthen our community and the work we do.
