UMBI is pleased to share a published scientific report arising from the PhD research of ๐๐ฌ. ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฅ ๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ซ๐๐ก ๐๐จ๐ก๐๐ฆ๐๐ ๐
๐๐ซ๐จ๐จ๐ค under the supervision of ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐จ๐๐ข๐๐ญ๐ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ซ. ๐๐๐จ๐ก ๐๐ฎ๐ข-๐ฆ๐ข๐ง. Published in IJID Regions, the study examines the nasal carriage of antibiotic-resistant bacteria among migrant workers from Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Nepal living in Malaysia's Klang Valley, highlighting an important but often overlooked public health issue affecting migrant worker communities in the country.
A total of ๐๐๐ ๐ก๐๐๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก๐ฒ ๐ข๐ง๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐๐ฎ๐๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐๐ซ๐ ๐ฌ๐๐ซ๐๐๐ง๐๐, revealing that nearly ๐๐% ๐๐๐ซ๐ซ๐ข๐๐ ๐ฆ๐๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง-๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ฉ๐ก๐ฒ๐ฅ๐จ๐๐จ๐๐๐ข (๐๐๐), underscoring the potential role of healthy carriers as silent reservoirs for antibiotic-resistant bacteria within the community. Distinct MRS species dominance was also observed among different nationalities. The study further identified a significant link between ๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ๐๐๐ ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐ง๐๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ and the presence of these pathogens, particularly among workers employed in the ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ฎ๐๐๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐๐๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฌ. Molecular analysis showed that many bacterial isolates exhibited ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ข๐๐ซ๐ฎ๐ ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ง๐๐, raising concerns for silent transmission within the community. These findings emphasize the need for better ๐ก๐๐๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฏ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐๐ and improved living standards for migrant populations to manage public health risks. Ultimately, the source serves as the first investigation into how ๐ฌ๐จ๐๐ข๐จ๐๐๐จ๐ง๐จ๐ฆ๐ข๐ ๐๐๐๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฌ may contribute to the spread of resistant staphylococci among these communities in Malaysia.
These findings further demonstrate UMBIโs growing contribution to translational and community-focused molecular medicine research, particularly in understanding antimicrobial resistance, pathogen transmission, and population health challenges affecting vulnerable communities.

The session highlighted fatty liver disease as a growing global health concern and a silent epidemic, with prevalence continuing to rise worldwide. Dr. Aishah shared that the global prevalence reached approximately 38% in 2022, affecting an estimated 3 billion individuals, while more than 30% of the population in South-East Asia is affected. In Malaysia, findings from the ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐ซ๐๐ข๐๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฏ๐๐ฒ (๐๐๐๐) ๐๐๐๐ indicate that approximately 28% of Malaysians have fatty liver disease.
A key focus of the presentation was the often-overlooked phenomenon of Lean MASLD (Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease), where The audience was introduced to the concept of ๐๐๐
