Angela Meade embodies the vengeful yet magnetic Princess Turandot, her soaring “In questa reggia” echoing through a set of almost cinematic scale. Across from her, Michael Fabiano’s heroic Calàf brings passion and power, under the baton of maestro Carlo Rizzi.

What makes this production particularly enchanting is the meticulous presentation of traditional Han Chinese costume, imagined and re-created with exquisite Italian operatic artistry. Every robe, headdress, and embroidered detail transforms the stage into a vision of elegance—an homage to Chinese heritage filtered through the most sumptuous lens of European opera.

📍 Zoom 線上教學，須全程開鏡與互動參與

7月14日、21日、28日；
8月4日、11日、18日、25日；

✳️ 完成線上課程者獲頒《出席證書》；如需《學習成就證書》，可報名參加額外實體測驗（需另付費）

What is Chinoiserie?

Chinoiserie (from the French chinois, meaning “Chinese”) is a European artistic and design style that emerged in the 17th and 18th centuries, inspired by Chinese and other East Asian aesthetics. It became especially popular during the Rococo period, when European artisans and architects incorporated Chinese motifs, patterns, and themes into furniture, ceramics, wallpaper, and even architecture.

Think of delicate porcelain vases, lacquered screens, pagoda-style pavilions, and intricate floral patterns—Chinoiserie was Europe’s fantasy of the East, often blending real Chinese elements with imaginative interpretations.

While not always historically accurate, Chinoiserie remains a fascinating example of cross-cultural artistic exchange, influencing design even today in fashion, interior decor, and luxury goods.

🌟 Celebrating Excellence in Language Research 🌟

Congratulations to Lew Voon Khong for being featured in the Universiti Malaya Faculty of Languages and Linguistics January 2025 Newsletter, under the section “In the Spotlight: FLL's Rising Star.”

Lew Voon Khong, the recipient of the 2024 Language Award from the Association of Peace, Conscience, and Reason (PCORE), was recognized for his outstanding dissertation:
“The Use of and Attitude Towards Cantonese Among Chinese Malaysians in Kuala Lumpur.”

This achievement highlights his dedication to exploring and preserving linguistic and cultural heritage. His research sheds light on the historical and cultural significance of Cantonese in Malaysia while advocating for the importance of heritage language preservation.

Lew expressed his gratitude to the research participants for sharing their invaluable insights, his supervisors for their guidance, and all who supported him along the way.

This recognition not only honors his hard work but also inspires further efforts to safeguard languages like Cantonese and Hakka for future generations.
