It all started off in December 2008 when a group of 50 youngsters in secondary school were challenged with a thought-provoking task that asked them if they wanted to be part of a new adventure – to write for and direct the content of an eight-page pullout titled Niexter. They of course jumped at the idea, and on January 24, 2009, Niexter was born. The title of the pullout took its name from "NiE"

(which is an acronymn for New Straits Times In Education, and the name of the unit that oversees this training programme for young writers) and "xter" (which is an abbreviation coined from "youngster"). The idea of the pullout was to have teens fashion content, layout, design, and "own" the pullout as theirs. Through constant feedback, Niexter evolved to what it is today - it features topics close to the hearts of Malaysian teens, and is a lifestyle supplement with an edutainment focus. In the two years Niexter has been in operation, the number of active young writers has swelled from 50 to 250. And what started out as four to eight pages. And now, we have shifted from print to online platform. If all you want is a chance to express your views and share your thoughts, in Niexter is where you belong!
