The word "AI" has been the buzz of many - some without understanding the true nature of it. In my training sessions, I often get asked if AI will replace employees. Not quite. You see, AI is there to help us make better decisions and solve problems IF you know how to use the right AI tool. Today, with various chatbots, one can quickly get answers to most questions. However, the key is not just to ask, but how to ask. This is the art of prompting!

With this in mind, we have catered short 1-day training sessions, all HRD Corp approved, on the use of Microsoft Copilot AI to better improvise your day to day work, be it analyzing data to creation of dashboards via Excel; content summarization and design assistance using PowerPoint; and content generation and improving writing style in Word, amongst others.

You’re all pieces of data!

That look on their faces said it all. They probably thought that I’ve lost it, and the question posed was meant for another group of audience. I carried on and asked what differs the males from the females? The puzzled look appeared deeper! From the back, one said it was their appearance, the other said it was their colorful dressing. The quietness cracked! I had a group of 40 participants, predominantly females, and a few males. The program was on data analysis, and my focus was on training them to observe, not just see. Identifying patterns and trends, handling databases, filtering and displaying only what is relevant, ensuring data is cleansed and formatted, were all part of the training. Mistakes are almost always human made.

Over the years of training, I’ve had engaging sessions with participants. You meet introverts and extroverts alike, but what stands out is how we communicate with them. The subject matter matters, but breaking them to see you as a person, not as a trainer, gets higher credit. The bank employees were there to learn to present their findings to their superiors and many did not have much clue. What are we looking for? How can we find that specific information?

The 2 days ended up on a high note. As the day progressed, they started opening up. What did we learn? Story telling always makes a difference and when you can relate it to the subject matter, the obstacle is removed. Charts are nice to see but converting them to infographics is more eye catching. The eyes were locked to the screen, and hands glued to the mouse. As they observed the data presented to them and worked on the activity, I began to study them further. Somehow left-handed participants always had my attention. Scribbling notes at an angle of 90 degrees makes me wonder how they trained their eyes to do so. The hand placement, gestures and posture always appear different from the righties. Emotional expression appeared stronger too. As I walked around to observe their work, some took the opportunity to query further. Simple and easy to understand solutions always worked. Finally, when it came towards the end of the second day, and hearing the words “Congratulations, you have all graduated!”, made them sigh with relief in a cheerful way. Now, they can present their data creatively!

This has been my passion as a trainer for the last 20 odd years. Today, besides the corporate sector, university and college students also benefit from this type of training before they hit the work force as they are now equipped with an additional skillset. Walk, Analyze, Repeat: How Hiking Reveals Your Strategy Superpowers

In my years of hiking, encouraging newbies to become part of our group, going through the challenging ups and downs of various trails, crossings of rivers filled with leeches and other creatures, it never downed my spirits to why go through this torture for a measly few minutes at the peak. I see each trail as a canvas, each step a data point, painting a vibrant picture of nature's wonders. Think of me as an explorer-analyst, constantly fueled by an insatiable curiosity for the unseen. Every rustle in the leaves and unique rock formation becomes a whispered secret waiting to be unveiled and data to be collected.

Analyzing this data, both internal (my heart rate, perspiration manner, energy levels and burning of calories) and external (weather patterns, trail difficulty, and elevation levels), is not just about reaching the top. It is about understanding the intricate dance between nature and humanity. I push my limits, not just physically, but also my ability to interpret the whispers of the wild while watching unusual movements on the ground and above me.

Once back home, being comfortable sitting on my favorite spot on our couch, I start looking back at the various aspects of data collected earlier. Now comes the analysis. The word “data analysis” is often thought of as people confined to spreadsheets and computer screens. What if I told you that every time you lace up your hiking boots and hit the trail, you are engaging in a powerful form of data analysis? Hiking, with its rhythmic steps and introspective moments, can be a surprisingly effective tool for strategizing your future plans.

The Power of Solo Data Collection

Hiking often becomes a solitary journey, allowing you to disconnect from the digital noise and reconnect with yourself. This mental space is perfect for gathering internal data points. It is like data analysis for your body. Listen and observe the data points:
• Your energized level by breathing the fresh air,
• How stressed are your muscles based on inclines,
• Can you carry on bearing the aches and pains,
• The most important life saver - water! Are you carrying sufficient water for the hike?
• Food, especially those high in carbohydrates to refuel the energy level,
• First aid kit items for any unbound emergencies,
• What emotions are you going through as you navigate different terrains?
• Does a challenging climb spark fear or determination?
• Does reaching the final peak trigger joy or relief?
• Is your mind focused, or easily distracted by passing thoughts?
• Are creative ideas flowing more freely amidst nature’s surroundings?
• Is the weather pattern impacting your performance level?
• Can you quickly adapt to different terrains?
• Are certain landscapes and wildlife evoking specific memories and emotions?

Hiking is like mental data analysis. Analyzing these “mental data points” reveals your focus levels and creative potential. Embrace the trail and company, as it is a data detox for a sharper, more creative mind!

Mapping Hiking with Data Analysis

As an avid hiker locally and overseas for more than 20 years, I have experienced firsthand the numerous benefits that hiking brings to both my physical and mental well-being. It has not only allowed me to maintain a healthy lifestyle but also forge meaningful connections with fellow hikers.
In today's data-driven world, hiking and the principles of data analysis, analytics, presentation, and visualization using Microsoft Excel can surprisingly intersect. Let's explore how hiking can be related to these aspects of data management and informed decision-making.
1. Data Analysis: Just as hiking requires gathering and analyzing information about trails, weather conditions, and terrain, data analysis involves collecting and examining data to identify patterns, trends, and insights. Both activities demand attention to detail, critical thinking, and the ability to draw meaningful conclusions.
2. Analytics: Hiking, like analytics, involves using available resources strategically. From choosing the right gear, planning the route, and estimating travel time, hikers utilize analytics to optimize their outdoor experiences. Similarly, in data analytics, professionals leverage tools and techniques to extract valuable information and drive informed business decisions.
3. Presentation: Hiking allows for the presentation of various elements, such as breathtaking landscapes, unique flora and fauna, and cultural insights. Similarly, in data presentation, visualizing data through charts, graphs, and interactive dashboards enhances understanding and facilitates effective communication of complex information.
4. Visualization using Microsoft Excel: Just as hikers rely on maps, compasses, and GPS devices to navigate their trails, professionals in data management and analytics can benefit from Microsoft Excel's visualization capabilities. Excel provides a range of tools to create visually appealing charts and graphs, making it easier to interpret and communicate data-driven insights.
By drawing parallels between hiking and aspects of data analysis, analytics, presentation, and visualization using Microsoft Excel, we can appreciate the value of outdoor experiences in fostering skills that are essential in today's data-centric world. So lace up your hiking boots and embark on both physical and analytical adventures!
