The Studies of Popular Music Workshop
12-14 January 2018
Muzium Negara, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Research on popular music in Southeast Asia has grown in recent years, resulting in popular music publications on Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar and Malaysia. Hence, there is a need to bring together in this workshop new and experienced scholars, students, music practitioners, educators, professionals and institutional administrators to share their latest findings, experiences, exchange ideas and methods; drawing connections between their topics and subjects of research and practice.
This workshop is organized in tandem with the establishment of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music – Southeast Asia (IASPM-SEA) branch. The Royal Musical Association (RMA) – Southeast Asia branch and the International Council for Traditional Music – Performing Arts of Southeast Asia (ICTM – PASEA POP) sub-study group, also support this workshop.
Topics of discussion will include research methods specific to popular music studies, fundamental literature on popular music studies, publishing journal articles on popular music and contemporary trends in the study of popular music worldwide.
Dr Sarah Hill, supported by Cardiff University, Wales UK, will lead sessions on research methods and conceptual approaches specific to popular music studies and will share recent developments in popular music studies. Her summary CV is attached below. The full program will be made available by 20 December, with participants expected to arrive on 12 January at 2.00pm, and to depart on 14 January at 1pm.
We invite participants to share their ongoing research and insights on popular music studies in this workshop. Abstracts of no more than 200 words should be submitted to [email protected] the latest by 15 December.
