MIER Brown Bag Talk Series - Cultural Values, Innovativeness, and Entrepreneurial Competencies: Evidence from Malaysian Ethnic Entrepreneurs

The Azman Hashim Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation Research recently hosted Associate Professor Dr. Shehnaz Tehseen from Sunway Business School, Sunway University, for our Brown Bag Talk Series discussing “Cultural Values, Innovativeness, and Entrepreneurial Competencies: Evidence from Malaysian Ethnic Entrepreneurs.”

The session examined how cultural values influence entrepreneurial behaviour, innovativeness, and business performance among Malay, Malaysian Chinese, and Malaysian Indian entrepreneurs within Malaysia’s multi-ethnic business environment.

Drawing from three integrated studies, Dr. Shehnaz shared insights into how entrepreneurial competencies and innovation pathways are shaped by different cultural experiences, social norms, and value systems. The discussion challenged the notion of a single national entrepreneurial culture, instead underscoring the importance of recognising subcultural and ethnic diversity within entrepreneurship research and ecosystem development.

The session was further honoured by the presence of Tan Sri Mohd Effendi Norwawi, Chairman of MIER, Tan Sri Dr. Sulaiman Mahbob, Executive Director of MIER and brought together representatives from ministries, entrepreneurship-enabling agencies, academia, financial institutions, industry associations, and the public, reflecting continued interest in strengthening Malaysia’s entrepreneurship ecosystem through research and dialogue.

Thank you to all participants for contributing to the thoughtful and engaging exchange.

MIER introduces its new publication series - the Monthly Macro Outlook

This series will be published monthly, highlighting insights from the latest published data and engagements with industry.

The first May 2026 edition highlights the growth optimism as forecasted by Bank Negara Malaysia and the IMF compared to the government’s October budget figures has now been overshadowed by concerns over the impact of the war on Iran.

Key insights:
• Household demand and E&E exports driven by global AI investment are expected to be growth drivers.
• However a prolonged energy crisis may dampen consumer and business sentiment while there is also some concerns over AI bubble.
• Fiscal strategy is shifting toward protecting households while tightening non - critical government spending.
• Interest rates will likely remain stable in the near term, with the financial system staying supportive of SMEs facing risks from high energy prices.

MIER Brown Bag Talk Series: Entrepreneurship Landscape in Malaysia

MIER was delighted to have Mrs. Viviantie Sarjuni, CEO of National Entreprenuership Institute (INSKEN) as the speaker of our Brown Bag Talk Series, “Entrepreneurship Landscape in Malaysia”.

The session explored how Malaysia’s entrepreneurship ecosystem is evolving towards a more inclusive and impact driven direction, including the shift from conventional to inclusive businesses and social enterprises. It also highlights the importance of financial sustainability as a foundation for businesses to grow and scale their social impact.

A key focus of the discussion is the role of collaboration in strengthening the ecosystem, especially through Public–Private–People partnerships where government, private sector, and communities work together to create meaningful and sustainable impact.

The conversation also touches on emerging opportunities in the creative economy, youth participation, and broader social innovation efforts, showing how entrepreneurship can go beyond profit to create long-term value for society.

Thank you to all who joined and contributed to the conversation, your engagement made this event a success.

While the full impact of the US-Iran conflict has yet to be felt, its immediate repercussions are likely to emerge in the near term.

MIER recently conducted consultations with industry players and businesses, as well as government-related enabling agencies, the financial sector, chambers of commerce and business councils, and civil society organisations, to gather views on the implications of the conflict for the Malaysian economy.

A key expectation is that logistics costs and input prices will inevitably rise, which will, in turn, be quickly reflected in the cost of living. These pressures are expected to affect business performance over the next two to three months, particularly among SMEs.

Sectors such as agriculture, printing, food services, and small-scale enterprises are expected to be particularly affected, with some businesses already beginning to feel the impact.
